Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

Bleeding in early pregnancy

Last week, at about 5.5 weeks pregnant, I had what I thought was quite a significant bleed and therefore miscarriage - me and husband having sex and I started to get a slight aching pain (like when getting a cervical smear!) and all of a sudden there was quite a lot of blood.. I bled that evening (probably about 2-3 tablespoons) and when I got out of bed the next morning but had barely any cramps; the blood was bright red but without any clots/stringiness... The following day there was the tiniest bit of spotting. Nothing like my normal periods (usually get bad bad cramps).
I've never been pregnant before, so I have NO IDEA what any of this means...
The problem is, I've not had many pregnancy symptoms so it's hard to tell whether my hormone levels have dramatically changed. Boobs still feel a bit swollen and my uteturus feels tight as before. Still fatigued but I'm always fatigued so this doesn't help! I felt pretty blue the next morning as we thought we had miscarried but other than that I feel really positive.i.e. not hormonal and teary!
Haven't really had any morning sickness. Possibly a sign I wasn't successfully pregnant in the first place.

I'm really keen to know how much blood you can lose while remaining pregnant...it seemed like such a lot for such an early stage but my intuition is just telling me it wasn't a miscarriage... Confused :(

You should call your GP or 111 and get an appointment with EPU for a scan. You should be treated as an emergency case and get an appointment pretty quickly. Any bleeding in early pregnancy should be looked into. It could be nothing, bleeding after sex is common. It could be something signficant. Your scan may not show much because it's early so prepare yourself for them maybe not being able to tell and having to return for a second scan later on. This happened to me and it wasn't good news but there are so many women for which it is a false alarm so please don't panic, just get yourself seen. Best of luck Flowers

Happened to me too and sadly I did miscarry a twin but I only knew this by going to the EPAU. Flowers Early pregnancy is so scary I think.

You must get an appointed with EPU asap. It might be fine but you need your HCG levels checked and a scan. Fingers crossed for you x

Hi guys, good news I'm so relieved - scan showed a teeny tiny thing, all fine, nothing untoward and even the sound of a heartbeat which was incredible at that stage.. Bleed was most likely from the cervix outer from a vessel/capillary bursting from sex as it's so tender.
Thanks for the advice - I'm glad I went to EPU - and for the kind words. x

What wonderful news! I am over the moon for you - and a heartbeat too - you've got a little strong one there, congratulations! Grin

Great news! Once a heart beat has been seen, your baby is far more likely to be ok Flowers
