advice needed please

Hi all,

Just need some advice really. I had a miscarriage in March at 12 weeks but baby had stopped developing at week 9 I was told by scan. Had retained products so had surgical option. Waited for one cycle and am now pregnant again.

I went on holiday a week after I had positive test and was fine until last Thurs then I had diarhea for 2 days, stomach and sciatica type back pains and twinges in ovary areas. Also brown discharge started and then it became stringy (sorry TMI) Also had red streaks on wiping just once. Im back from holiday now and feeling better though still getting brown stringy discharge.

I had similar symptoms around same time in the last pregnancy and had scan which found nothing wrong but then went on to have miscarriage 2 months later.

So Im really unsure if anything is wrong or if the symptoms I had are all unrelated to poss (missed) miscarriage. I have had sciatica type pains only with both pregnancies. Not had it before.

I said to myself I would wait till 12 week scan this time as was so often at the EPU last time but I dont know if I can wait the 6 weeks till then given how ill I felt last week. I dont want to have a missed miscarriage and get a shock at 12 week scan. Does anyone know if they will be able to see the fetus in a scan if done at 6 weeks? I had a scan in last pregnancy at 4.5 weeks and it only showed the sac.

Any thoughts or advice much welcome. thanks.

I'm sorry to hear about your worries.
A scan at 6 weeks has the possibility to see a heartbeat.
DS1 didn't have a HB at 6 weeks, but did 2weeks later.
DS2 has a HB at 6 weeks (abdominal scan each time).
But as you previous history shows, a HB at 6 weeks is, unfortunately not a guarantee of a baby at the end. Flowers

A foetal pole should be visible at 6 weeks and HB normally starts in the 6th week. Scans can still be a bit inconclusive around then though, they won't commit to bad news if what is seen doesn't tally with expected development, if dates are a couple of days out it might be ok. They date by length of FP, assuming it appears at 6 weeks and grows 1mm a day, so at 6+5 it should be 5mm.
Could you hold out until 8 weeks? If you have a good scan with a HB and growth in line with your dates at 8 weeks then risk of MC drops to 3%, it also splits the difference between BFP and 12 week scan.
The spotting, ovary and sciatica pains can all be absolutely normal in early pregnancy. I think the uterus must be served by the same spinal segment as the sciatic nerve, I felt labour pains mostly down the back of my legs wierdo
Really hope it all works out for you this time. Have you joined a pregnancy after miscarriage thread? It helps with the scanxiety to have others in the same boat.

Hi,

Thanks both for your replies.

Im think I could hold out till 8 weeks and Id rather go to EPU for scan when they can tell me something. If inconclusive would only worry me more.

Yes, would totally second the decision to wait till 8-9 weeks. In my second pregnancy I had a scan at 7 weeks and there was no heartbeat but it was too early to say for sure it was a mmc so I had to wait till 10 weeks anyway (when I started to miscarry). OTOH in my third pregnancy I had a scan at 6 weeks, saw a heartbeat and then was discharged from EPU clinic. Private scan at 10 weeks showed a mmc. You really need to be clear of the 6-7 week time to be able to say for sure.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply toomuch.

Have been checked over at local hosp this week as GP sent me to A and E as the back pains were causing numbness. It is sciatica and Im feeling better now thankfully.

The GP is concerned about the brown discharge and insisted that I go asap to the EPU for a scan. So I am going to go but on Mon which will be 7 weeks pregnant. Hopefully it will be able to show a healthy pregnancy although i appreciate I cant count everything as ok until after 12 week scan.

Hello everyone

I'm experiencing my first miscarriage. It was called a missed miscarriage. The baby stopped developing after about 6 weeks. The hospital confirmed this with a scan. Following the scan they offered me the options to see the miscarriage through. Myself and partner decided on the medically managed one. I had pesseries inserted that day, given painkillers and allowed home.

That night I hardly slept due to the pain. Nothing like a heavy period! I'm now on day 4 and especially at night time when I go to bed the pain becomes really intense. I honestly thought it would've eased by now. The bleeding has got heavier in comparison to yesterday and I'm thinking if no good tonight, I'm going to contact my gp.

Anyone experiencing or experienced something similar?

Thank you

Hi Tired,

Im very sorry to hear of your loss. How are you now?

I cant advise im afraid as my miscarriage started without tablets though did happen 3 weeks after the baby had stopped developing. And I later had to have the surgical option for retained products.

I gave in and had a scan at EPU today. Am 6 weeks 6days according to the hosp and that also matches my dates. Im so glad I went as it put my mind at rest. I saw the embryo in its sac and saw the heartbeat fluttering away. It was a very moving experience as hadnt seen this in scans I had in previous pregnancy. I need to go back for a follow up scan in a week as it was in a funny position and they couldnt take the measurements they wanted. So will be good to see it again bigger and prior to 12 week scan.

Well pain has been explained. Hadn't passed everything. Can't believe it took a week!!! Feel so empty. My partner keeps asking if I'm ok and I say yes. When he asks what I'm thinking I say nothing because I'm not thinking of anything. Weird having no feeling inside you.

On a positive note we are going to try again just have some medication issues to sort out first. Should take 6 months so hopefully January we can start again.

Hi Tired, sorry to hear how you are feeling. I guess its a case of going through the different stages of the grieving process.

I wish you all the best for trying again. All I can say is you never forget the loss but you can feel happy again after grieving your loss.

Take care. x
