Miscarriage/pregnancy loss

3rd mmc and struggling

avaj · 11/03/2011 13:56

I have just found out at my scan that instead of being 13weeks pg, i have had another mmc. I am so devestated, and this time I am really wanting some reason for it. I know that it's unlikely I will get any, but I want to push for tests this time.
I have had 3 in a row now, and although I found out at different times - 17 weeks, 12 weeks and 13 weeks, all of the babies measured between 11 and 12 weeks. Does anyone have any idea of why this might be?
I'm sorry this is a bit of a ramble, but I am all over the place just now, and just needed to post.

You poor, poor thing.

I don't have any suggestions for you, but I just wanted to give you an unmumnsetty hug and to tell you that you're not alone.

Do push for tests - after three MC they have to start testing you, and that will make you feel that at least something is being done to help you.

Big hugs.

Massive sympathy - have had 3 mmc too so know how devastating it can be. I think tests are way to go as they should rule things out even if dont give you any answers. There are some great knowledgeable people on here- recurrent buns thread is hive of knowledge so may be worth posting there if ni answers here.

Take care of yourself- I am so sorry you are going through this

I am so sorry, I am currently on my second MMC - it is awful. Big hugs to you. xxxx

Definitely push for tests, I wish I could but know I won't be able to.

Take care. Hugs.

So sorry for you.

After my third mc I was straight away put forward for tests for recurrent miscarriage. Do you have a rmc clinic at your local hospital? If not then push your gp for a referral - if you are near London then St Mary's is probably your first port of call.

While waiting for your referral you can ask your gp if they can request you have the following blood tests:

Day 2-3 Hormone (fsh, lh, testosterone, prolactin). Day 2-3 refers to the cycle day you have the blood taken.
Day 21 progesterone test
Thyroid test
Anti-rubella antibodies
Lupus anticoagulant
Anti-cardiolipin antibodies

They may not be able to request all of them but even just the first two will help speed up the process of investigation by seeing if your hormones are normal.

The last three are the basic tests for clotting issues. There are more that can be done but these probably need to be requested by a consultant.

I remember being absolutely desperate for answers after my third. You can convince yourself two are down to bad luck but when it happens a third time it's not so easy to accept. Take care and feel free to join us on recurrent buns thread (I've just had my fourth mc - so looking into private tests now as all my nhs tests have come back clear).

Thank you for your replies.
Digital I am so sorry for your losses, it is so unfair. I am in Glasgow and as far as I know there isn't a rmc at my hospital, I just feel a bit lost about where to go, my G.P doesn't know what has happened yet.
The list of tests is really helpful though. I am booked for medical induction next weekend and will ask hosp staff then what they can do.

hi avaj i'm so sorry that you're going through this. these are relatively late first trimester miscarriages. are you having an ERPC?
If i were you i'd push for tissue testing of your embryo, as this could provide useful information. this isn't always available on the NHS - it very much depends on the hospital, but it's definitely worth asking about. you don't say how old you are?(hugely relevant when it comes to possible causes..)
we had four miscarriages in a row - it was absolutely awful. i know how you feel and my heart goes out to you. the third time it happens, it's such a shock.

Thanks sotough, sounds like you have been through an awful time.
I'm not having an ERPC, I am going to have it medically managed, so they should be able to do tissue testing, if they offer it though.
I am 34 and I know that my age isn't exactly in my favour now. I am starting to feel too old and tired to try again, it's just crap when you go through weeks of feeling sick and exhausted for it to end like this again.
Take care. x

so sorry avaj.

have also had 3 MMCs at a similar stage to you.

had all the tests and they came back clear, am now in cycle 5 of TTC again, which is the longest I've ever gone before without getting pg.

I am lucky in that I have one child, who is nearly 3. BUT I am nearly a decade older than you. 34 is very young still, honest! Envy

Totally get why you feel you can't go through the horrid first trimester again with no reward. I felt just like that after the 3rd one.

As has been said, push for tests. There's also a very supportive recurrent buns thread where you could get handholding and advice.

Hope you get some answers.

I am so sorry you are going through this.

I was in the same position and couldn't face trying again without knowing what had happened. I had every test going. Nothing was found. I had my DS finally when I was 39.

I hope the tests give you some answers.

I have just started the process of testing and found this website helpful in terms of understanding what the problems could be and what the tests are - this consultant runs the early miscarriage unit at St Georges in SW London.

www.obstetrics-gynaecology.co.uk/

So sorry for your loss and I hope this helps you.

Avaj so sorry for your losses, its terribly hard to be positive after three, you feel like all hope has gone and theres nowhere else to go. I feel exactly the same but I have had the tests and also seen a RMC consultant. This is my situation which I will share with you because in some ways we have a similar situation.

MMC - 9 weeks - found at 12 week scan
MC - 8 weeks natural (never had scan)
MMC - 15.5 weeks - found at midwife appointment (last scan 13.5 weeks downs test 1:50,000 as good as you get!)

I've had all the tests Digi mentioned above and all blood clotting tests done the day I deliverred my third baby. They all came back clear (which is often the case). The post mortum also showed that the baby was perfect and as the downs test came back at the best result the consultant rulled out chromasomes completely. When people are having later mc ie. around 12 weeks the most posible cause is blood clotting. Obviously they may find other things when you have the tests done but she did think that my pattern suited the treatment for blood clotting so has prescribed aspirin.

Surely your GP or someone in the practice will know where you can go for all these tests. I wish you lots of luck in getting some answers. Its so hard to know what to do. I hope this has helped a little.
