Pill / menopause question

I am almost 50 (in 8 mths time). For a couple of years my peirods have got heavier and I've taken tranexamic acid for about 2 years which helped. However the ladt 5 mths or so periods are heavier again, with some clots and flooding. Also quite a lot of pain, and bleeding mid minth and after sex.

So went to see my doctor (who appeared to be a 12 year old girl!) who was very understanding. Firstly she referred me for an ultrasound scan. Which all came back clear, sonographer found nothing unusual.

Doctor offered me the pill. I took it the first month and my peirod was much lightwr and virtually no pain - all good I hear you say. Big BUT is that it made me a horrible person! I was tetchy and irritable. Snappy with my husband, and I felt irritated all the time. I was not affectionate and did not want sex at all.

My husband is a very understanding man, but he missed the old me. We are close and have a good sex life, usually 4-5 times a week.

He said I must do what was best for me, he knows how much the heavy peirods have gotten me down. But I don't want to be that horrible tetchy cow.

So do I continue with the pill so my periods are more manageable or stop and be a nice, affectionate person?

Doctor told me I could only take the pill until I'm 50 anyway, so only for another 8 mths. Also my BP is borderline high, still within an ok range, but a bit high.

Could you ask about HRT instead of the pill? Could be that it's the perimenopause that's causing the bad periods?
Can I ask what your blood pressure is? I also got told I had borderline high, so not been allowed HRT yet, though I've brought it down a bit by quitting smoking and diet and exercise over the last few weeks

Sounds very 'normal' for peri menopause. Bit unusual to be offered the Pill at 49/ 50 although they say it's safe for women up to the menopause but that usually means staying on it if you've been on it, not starting it now.

Did you ask why or did your Dr explain why she's chosen it?

The hormones in HRT are much lower so it would be more normal to offer you HRT now which may help regulate the periods and the amount of bleeding.

Thanks for the replies. Doctor didn't mention HRT so I will ask. I am waiting for a gynaecology appointment so hopefully can discuss things more fully there.

In the meantime I've decided not to carry on with the pill as I really am not a nice person when on it 😤
