Menopause

First hot flushes

I've assumed myself to be peri- for about 6 years now. Started with night sweats, anxiety, tummy weight gain and so on. Since then my periods have been fairly regular, although cycle is definitely getting longer.

I haven't experienced what I believe to be a hot flush, although my internal thermostat appears to have gone very wonky, I often feel too hot or too cold.
Yesterday, for the first time I had what I think were two hot flushes. They weren't as extreme as I've read about, but still unpleasant.

To get to the point. I'm now 54, does anyone think the hot flushes may be a signal that periods will stop soon or is this just the start of more symptoms and a few years of misery? I feel like it should be stopped now at my age.

Everyone is different! I have friends who have had loads of flushes right through peri. I have a mum who is /was having them in her 80s after a menopause around 54, and my dr has said some women have them for life. Sorry :(
Some symptoms only start once our oestrogen levels fall. I didn't have a hot flush until I was around 53 and had missed 4 periods in a row. They were never really severe but they were every hour all day.

No one can say what you will experience. You may find the flushes stop when your periods stop which should be soon, but equally you may find they get a lot worse when you are not producing much oestrogen any more.

I am only 41 but fertility docs say I am heading for early menopause- most likely my periods will stop within the year. I have only had 4 periods in the last year.

My hot flushes are around 30-40 a day and a bit overwhelming at times. They seem to go in phases- loads of them for a month or so then I get a break for a week which is nice Grin

I can cope with them a lot better than the anxiety which is really making my life harder right now

I've been getting flushes for about the last 4 months. No period for 6 months. I'm 45. The flushes aren't as bad as I think some women experience. I get them mainly at night, but not exclusively. I'm a bit surprised to be getting meno symptoms but I am nearly 46 and I think this is probably it. Waiting for blood test results which may confirm I suppose.

I'm 52 and know I'm peri-menopausal. Unfortunately, due to history of breast cancer, I can't use HRT. I am on anti-depressants for severe mood swings and anxiety, but doesn't help with the flushes. Added to that I'm very fit so do tend to start sweating quite quickly.

I get flushes every half hour or so whilst in bed, to the extent that my DH now notices and we can't cuddle much any more. I'm just too hot and [errr...] sweaty. I also break out into a sweat just after a shower [grrr.].

have flushes during work and tend to wear sleeveless tops with a cardi over the top, or a scarf I can take off and put back on when I need to. I am also planning to buy a fan you can l plug in to a USB port so I can cool down when at work. Just feel that I am constantly waiting for the next flush to hit and feel cold in between!

Not great!

I am 50 and would love a few hot flushes. I always feel cold - I figure a hot flush would mean I was actually warm for the first time in ages. Every other woman in my family has gone through menopause in their late 30s/early 40s for some reason. And here I am 50 with periods like clockwork and still chugging along fine. Argh.

Ginger, that's actually bad news if your relatives have had premature menopause without being treated with HRT; their risk of osteoporosis and heart disease is increased quite a lot. The average age in he UK is 52 so there is plenty of time for you yet! Don't wish the menopause to hurry up- loss of oestrogen brings s whole load of new problems!

Accupuncture has stopped my awful hot flushes. I had 4 sessions - 1 a week - the best £200 I have ever spent.

I think I had a first hot flush today. I am 45. Periods regular but recently have been a bit erratic. More frequent and just for a day or so. This morning my ears started tingling, and as I rubbed them, I felt a prickly heat moving up my face. Looked in mirror and I was bright red. Hands and arms also blotchy. Lasted about 10-15 minutes then back to normal. Really, really scared me. Very worried now. Has anyone else experienced this? My husband said it was like an allergic reaction.
