Low-carb bootcamp

Not getting enough protein.

Hi, I have been looking at low carbing for a while. I've started putting meal plans together etc. But I don't eat meat and very little fish.
On Atkins site it said to have 115-175g protein per meal, I'm no where near this!
Any suggestions for adding protein to meals?
I have signed up for the next bootcamp, but want to start getting a feel for it all now.

I am not sure exactly how much protein I have per meal (I do eat meat and fish though) but why don't you write some of your meal plans down here and we can see if we can help.

There are some other LCers who are vegetarian/vegan so they might be able to help.

Eggs, cheese (halloumi and paneer are particularly good at adding 'substance') quorn and tofu.

Rose Elliot's low carb vegetarian book is good

But the amounts you've mentioned are massive - per meal??
Yes it will be a struggle - think if adding protein powder to shakes etc too

I'm glad you mentioned that Sunshine, yes, it says that amount per meal!
I'm just going to do what I can.

At my maintenance weight I was aiming for 90g protein per day which was 20% of my daily calories. I thought massive quantities of protein weren't good for you?

Most sources these days say a daily intake 0.8gr per kg body weight or 0.5gr per lb. If you have a lot to lose you should base it on a sensible target weight ie your lean weight. For most women it equates to between 50 and 100 gr per day. LCHF is supposed to be moderate protein with around 20% of calories from protein.

Atkins is quite outdated in low carb diet terms - it is really too high in protein and too low in fat. You should be getting most of your fuel from fat, not protein.

I really recommend 'The art and science of low carbohydrate living' by Volek and Phinney for getting your head around it all

The amounts mentioned aren't protein per meal, it's the weight of a portion of meat or fish. Eg according to myfitness pal, my 125g portion of salmon today contained 24g of protein.

I can't help on vegetarian sources of protein though.

Pootle - modern Atkins isn't like that, Atkins Induction is VERY similar to Bootcamp Smile

Are you just weighing your meat/fish, and assuming that this equates to protein? Because it isn't the same at all!

Ignore any counts like that, and forget Atkins if you've signed up to Bootcamp.

You should be eating fat:protein:carbs

Which will mean that the protein count of the meat you're eating will be lower than if you're eating lean meat.
