Moving to Bristol area - where to begin looking

My husband and I are leaving west London in the summer as my job is moving to Bristol and my husband’s office will now be based in Newbury although he mostly works from home.

I have 2 children, 2 and 5 so I looking recommendations of where to move that has good primary schools and nurseries.

My husband is a Londoner born and bred and wants a change from inner city living and central Bristol is very expensive now. And we really are sick of the traffic and the constant noise, craving peace, space and a garden.

Looking for cafe culture (important), shops, kids clubs and a community feel. I will need to travel into Bristol (Temple Meades) 3 dpw. My husband will need access to M4 when he does need to travel to the office. My family live in Cornwall.

We don’t know many people in the Bristol area, so any recommendations will be really appreciated.

Portishead, Thornbury, Alveston, Nailsea have been suggested to us.

A lot do to this year so having an idea where to begin looking in between lockdowns will be a great start.

Whats's your budget like?

The places with the vibrant cafe culture, shops, kids clubs and community feel are generally also places with traffic and small gardens because they are brilliant places to hang out and lots of people want to be there. (North Street area just to the south of the city centre and Gloucester Road to the north).

Maybe look at Long Ashton, as you would then be a very easy journey to get to the North Street area but you would be a bit further out into the country.

Have a look at Keynsham. Its midway between Bristol and Bath.
I have family just south of Newbury and it takes about an hour and a half door to door (although the final part of my journey to my relative is down an untarmaced road ). That's by going up to join the m4 at Bath rather than Bristol .
Keynsham has a railway station with direct trains to Bristol, Bath, London,Cardiff and Weymouth.
6 primary schools , 2 of which are brand new, and 2 secondary schools.
Several doctors surgeries.
Large park with decent play equipment.
Several pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Library
Council offices
Tesco,Sainsbury's and Iceland on the high street with a range of banks, independent shops and chains.

Why don’t you go a bit further north and look at Cheltenham, m4 easily accessible via the a419 and direct trains to Paddington

Portishead is trendy and Clevedon used to be quite nice with access to the sea, a park and a decent small town. I haven’t lived in the area for a few years but it’s worth checking out.
