Commute Buckden to Science Park

Hi Mumsnetters,
DH and I are moving to Buckden and he will be commuting to the Science Park. Can you give me an idea of commute time during rush hour? I know the A428 is quite congested and the A14 has ongoing works - does anyone know when these are due to finish?
Thanks xx

I actually can answer this!

The a14 works are due to be completed in late 2020. The a428 is indeed very busy at rush hour. I live not far from where you’re moving and my DP works in the science park. It can take him up to an hour to get to work most mornings. We live further into the journey so I would say to allow an hour to get in and out. The a14 improvements may help this but the problem with the A14 is the amount of accidents that occur on there and block the road.

Super helpful, thank you! Even if it’s depressed me a bit Wink

What age are your children?

They are 2 and 4. It’ll be a big change for them but they seem excited. What’s the area like to live in?

If anything happens to snarl up the A14, all the traffic will hit the A428 to attempt to avoid it. And vice versa. All bets are then off for how long it will take!

We've got a full year to go on the A14 roadworks for full completion. The new route of the A14 will certainly benefit you and that's due to open early. It will be carrying all the Cambridge to Huntingdon traffic initially though until the A1307 "local road" is completed.

Other thing to factor in is getting out of the Science Park at the end of the day. If your DP can be flexible with hours & avoid the peak time queues, that will be helpful.

The first bit of the a14 works is opening early December this year. It will be interesting to see how that affects the A1 and the local roads that are rat runs currently.

OP Buckden is very middle class/affluent. It does get really snarked up at peak times with traffic. So I wouldn’t want to live there but lots and lots of people do want to live there. It’s considered very desirable.

Buckden is lovely

The new A14 is due to open from Ellington to Swavesey on 09/12/2019, with the remainder being completed next year:
