Where to live near Manchester airport?

I’m looking for advice about areas to live near Manchester airport. We want to be no more than 30 mins from the airport, ideally south of the airport to be closer to family (Midlands).

The things we love about where we live now are being able to walk into town (market town - size 23,000) and the convenience of being close to shops, nice places to eat and drink and activities for our DD. We are also lucky to be close to nice open spaces. Medium term we will want good schools (DD is 2.5).

We don’t know a lot about the area so any advice about where to start our search would be helpful.

I would suggest Altrincham and its surrounding residential areas of Timperley, Hale, Hale Barns and Bowdon. It is a market town which has a good selection of schools and lots going on for children. It has excellent transport - trams covering Greater Manchester, trains to Chester and Manchester, 10 minutes to the airport and very close to M6. Dunham Massey, owned by the National Trust, is minutes away and is a favourite place for families as a safe place for children to walk, cycle and play. Tatton Hall and Park is also close by and has a similar feel.

I live in Sale Moor. 15 mins to airport. Tram 10 mins walk which goes to airport and into town. Sale moor village has lots of independent shops and some lovely restaurants. Close to Sale which has bigger supermarkets, library, waterside arts theater. Plenty of parks. All local schools are outstanding. Cheaper than timperley etc.

Altrincham area is great, however If you want to be south of the airport then Wilmslow, Alderley Edge or possibly Macclesfield. Knutsford or Holmes Chapel would also probably work and would keep you closer to the M6.

Sale /Sale Moor getting trendier and increasingly upmarket. New build houses on Northenden Road ( backing on to park) in catchment for good schools, near shops , metro etc start at @ £500k for 3 bedrooms & period 4 bed semi near park sold for £850k recently. Not a cheap option! Have you thought about Macclesfield area? Market town, open countryside, cheaper property, good rail and road links, good schools.

There are much cheaper houses in Sale Moor than the the bonkers Northenden Road developments. But otherwise I agree - great place to live with excellent access to the airport.

Altrincham and surrounding areas are great as near the airport but no noise from the flight path unlike Knutsford.

I also second Altrincham/Hale/Timperley. I'm in Hale and can walk to Hale or Altrincham easily. Lots of restaurants and bars. Schools are great and rate well nationally.

It's about 10-15 mins drive to the airport on the back roads and also close to NT properties Dunham, Tatton and Quarry Bank Mill. You can tram into Manchester in 20-25 mins.

Just to add that Altrincham and Sale, as nice as they are, feel like suburbs. That's what they are now.

If you want the feel of a small market town you need to look at places like Macclesfield, Wilmslow area and even outer Stockport like Marple, Romiley etc. You may also want to consider Glossop and surrounding area, Lymm.

People obsess over WA14 but it's hugely overpriced now thanks to Londoners moving up north.

Nice towns and a bit posh - Wilmslow and Knutsford
High Legh is a really nice little place with its own primary school and feeder to Lymm High School.
I like Altrincham. It's sort off suburban but separate too.
Lots of people choose Sale. For me it's a bit too suburban feeling.
We live in outer Salford. Still less than half an hour to the airport at a quiet time but a bit more otherwise. Worsley, Monton and parts of Swinton are nice.
If you don't need to be near the city of Manchester itself, go anywhere near the M6 e.g. Holmes Chapel and all the towns ending in wich.

What's your budget and what style of property do you like?

Consider south stockport eg Bramhall, marple, and Poynton (cheshire). There are God awful roadworks right now between there and the airport but they will be finished next year which will make access to the airport dead easy-15 minutesish

I would really recommend timperley or Lymm.
