Hello!

We are moving from London in the summer and are thinking of Merchant Taylor's boys school for our eldest son - he would be going in to Yr 9. Just wondered if anyone might have any experience of the school at all or know anything that might give me a bit more of a feeling for what it's like? I'd be so grateful for any help/comments. BW MM

Sorry I can't help more, only to say that I'm from Crosby where Merchant Taylors is and many friends of mine went there. The school has an excellent reputation, gets superb results and has incredible facilities.

Bluecoat is the other most highly regarded selective school on Merseyside, which is non fee paying.

You might want to consider Wirral too. I live is West Wirral, which is wonderful.
We have a Grammar school system. You can then also consider independents: Birkenhead school, Kingsmead and Kings in Chester.
I'm from Liverpool and historically Merchant's has had a good reputation. Facilities are great too.
My sister considered it for her children but chose another as she felt it had gone a bit "downhill" in recent years.
However, it's worth going to visit, in order to judge for yourself.
Good luck and welcome to Merseyside.

It's a selective school with an excellent reputation. The curriculum is iGCSE and your son would need to pick his options in Year 9, they pick streams in Year 8 so you may want to contact the school if you're seriously considering it. PM me if you'd like more info.

Thanks so much for your msgs ladies and apols for not responding sooner. Trying to sort out the move with three very different kids into three different schools has been all consuming. We're now almost sorted - just as well since term finishes in a couple of days!! We've ended up getting a house on the Wirral (Meols) as it is near the best special school we could find for our autistic son. We've just been offered a place v last minute in Calday grammar yr 9 for our eldest and need to accept by Monday. Any advice re Calday would he really helpful and much appreciated.

MM xx

Hi there. Our son will be Year 3 in September and we have Haberdashers and Merchant Taylor in our mind. I'd love to hear from parents with kids in these schools. I found lots of good information about these schools here, but about secondary, so I would love to know more about primary. Thank you!

Hi, I did my A-levels at Calday in the early ninties and it has always had,a good reputation. It was always on a par with Merchant Taylors', where my daughter is currently in infants. But we live on the outskirts of liverpool now. The Wirral is a beautiful place to live and I'd be back in a heartbeat if work was closer.

Scarisbrick Hall School is also worth looking into.

Hi. My ds has just finished A Levels at Calday and is going to university this weekend. We were really happy with it. Lots of choice for languages. Ds3 is taking the 11+ next week and is desperate to go there too.
