11+ tuition for RGS

Hi
We are relocating to Newcastle from London. Our eldest DS is going into Y5. We are staying in the state system for now but are hoping that he will get into RGS for secondary. He has had 6 months of 11+ tuition in London where we had been hoping to get him a grammar place as he is quite academic. Sadly, Newcastle has no grammars and whilst we are going to check out the local state secondary we would like to continue to prep him for 11+ entrance just in case. My question relates to 11+ tutors. Do / have any of you used a tutor for 11+ and if so how did you find them? I have found a few via Google but in London the good ones don't need to advertise so I am a little dubious! Advice would be appreciated!

OP, have you found any tutors yet? We are local, but have no clue how to go about finding tutors...

Good luck with the move.

Good luck with the move.

I live in the RGS district of Newcastle. I know there must be hundreds of people here who would know the answer to your question, yet no one has answered and sadly I am not one who would know. I think no one sees this thread.

As well as RGS, there is Newcastle School for Boys and Dame Allen's.
In the state sector here, there is Gosforth Central Middle School followed by Gosforth Academy. St Cuthbert's Catholic Boy's School (ex grammar school). St Mary's Catholic Comprehensive School. Heaton Manor Comprehensive is more for Jesmond. Emmanuel Academy in Gateshead can take people from a wider catchment I think.

There is a much nicer atmosphere here about schools than in London, in my opinion, in that people work hard but there is not so much of an all or nothing approach to being good academically to the last exam point on the league table - all sorts of abilities/contributions are valued. I am sure your child will flourish.

Good luck.

Hi,

I was wondering whether you found a tutor?
I am a first year engineering student at Newcastle University but before moving here last month I used to live and work as a private tutor in London for 3/4 years. I specialise in the 11+ and maths. My method is to make lessons as enjoyable but educational as possible, and I have had a lot of success so far with children improving their marks hugely or getting into schools like Dulwich College. I had students of mixed abilities but the majority have been pretty intelligent and I've been working with them to get into grammar or private schools. I also have 2 months volunteering teaching experience in Indonesia and an online TEFL qualification.

I charge £30 an hour and can give you many references and send you my CV. I can tutor in my accommodation, the library, or your house, but I prefer not to travel to far.

Let me know if you are interested.
Best wishes,
Verity Thomas

If anyone is looking for a tutor I have recently moved up North and no longer have any clients...

If anyone is looking for a tutor I have recently moved up North again and currently only have one client so am looking to take on a few more.

I am a fourth year engineering student at Newcastle University and have been living in Plymouth for the last year doing my Year In Industry. I used to live and work as a private tutor in London for 3/4 years. I specialise in the 11+ and maths, but have taught all ages including adult-learners. My method is to make lessons as enjoyable but educational as possible, and I have had a lot of success so far with children improving their marks hugely or getting into schools like Dulwich College and James Allen's Girls' School. I had students of mixed abilities but the majority have been pretty intelligent and I've been working with them to get into grammar or private schools and with scholarships. I also have 2 months volunteering teaching experience in Indonesia and an online TEFL qualification.

I charge £40 an hour and can give you many references, in both Newcastle and London, and send you my CV. I can tutor in my accommodation, the city library, or your house, but I prefer not to travel too far.
