Hi, I am hoping that someone can help me. We are moving down to Derbyshire as soon as our house has sold here in Scotland. Could anyone advise of nice places and places to avoid. We have been looking at Matlock, Chesterfield, Littleover and Ilkeston. We really need good transport links as my daughter doesn't drive. Thanks in advance
Elaine

Hi there! Hope your house sale is going well. You are looking at some very different areas there, so would be useful to know what kind of things you like to do, or where you might be working if relevant?

Matlock is a lovely town, all the amenities you'd need, plus nice park, some lovely traditional houses, and closest to Peak District so some beautiful walks, places to visit etc. has train station with direct (but not fast!) links to Derby and Nottingham. The downside of Matlock is that traffic can be very busy in summer because of tourists on main road through Matlock up to Peak District.

I don't know chesterfield very well, town centre seems fine, big traditional market, good access to M1 and Sheffield, some lovely areas on outskirts.

Littleover is a suburb of Derby, so good bus links into the city and good train links from Derby to lots of places (direct trains to London and Scotland). There are some lovely parts of Littleover, some gorgeous traditional houses, then like most cities, some less nice parts. Derby has everything you need.

Ilkeston is probably where you'd get most for your money. It's a small town but has most stuff you'd need, lots of retail parks nearby including ikea. At risk of getting myself into trouble on here, it's not the most charming of places. Also worried that as you posted here a while ago you may have already found somewhere and if it's Ilkeston then ignore what I just said! Good bus links to Nottingham.

Hope that helps, happy to offer more help if I can!

Thanks for your reply. We are still looking at Chesterfield and Littleover. I did hear quite a bit about Ilkeston so we have decided that it might be best to avoid (Apologies to any one who lives there).

Hi there Elanie I am also moving from Scotland to Derby next year, but I am getting myself armed with information beforehand,I am considering Duffield/Allestree or further south Melbourne,I suppose it depends on how far you want to travel for work and also schooling!.

I have 3 kids ages 15,13 and 8 I am dreading them not fitting in at school and also me as not knowing anyone and being a stay at home mum.

Anyway let me know how you go ,I am also looking for meet up in Derbyshire but it seems alot of discussions are years old!.

Hi Annemarie We have now sold our house and still don't know where we are moving to! We are still looking at Littleover and Chesterfield but also looking at Long Eaton and Chilwell, in Nottingham. My kids have left school and are University school so we don't have to worry about schools. We are going down to the area on Monday to help my daughter move into her flat and will explore more areas. I can keep you updated if you want.

Hi Elaine that's great to here you are finally moving, hope everything goes well,it must be alot easier now the kids have left school.Because the English system is so different my son may have to repeat a year.

I am now looking at Hilton/willington/Chellaston area, but I think that a train station nearby is key.

Yes it would be great to here how you get on.

Hi Annmarie
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply but things have been hectic. We have now moved to Nottingham and living in Chilwell, which is a lovely place. It is close to both Nottingham and Derby which is handy. My son has lived down here for several years and has friends that live in Allestree and he said its nice.
One of my ex colleagues comes from Derbyshire and she says that Duffield is lovely as is Belper. She said that Matlock is nice but can be a bit touristy. Some parts of Derby are quite rural especially if you are used to living in the Glasgow area. That's one of the reasons that we chose Chilwell, closer to Nottingham.
Hope you get something sorted out

Elaine

Hi Elaine, I can understand that things are hectic as its a big move for you all,I have definitely decided on Mickleover and I know exactly which part to live in ,which is one major obstacle out of the way.I am planning to move earlier now next year which may also mean that my oldest Daughter will have to finish school in Scotland which I,m not looking forward too.

Hi all, we're just in the process of moving somewhere near my hubby's new job in Macclesfield. Buxton looks great - just looking for tips / advice after our first quick visit. We have a 6yr old looking to get into school ASAP and our youngest will start school in September. Any help appreciated on areas and schools. Thanks in advance...
