Barnsley!

Hello, i would welcome an advise on moving to Dodworth, Barnsley. I live in suberb of London for ten years and even thought it is pretty I fancy a change as it is too busy and too expensive. My boyfriend lives in Dodworth and visiting him there was a shock for me. I would love to be with him but moving in South of Yorkshire is quite extreme for me. I am not English but love English countryside and would like to leave my lonely and hecktic life in and around London behind... But not sure if Dodworth is the right area to go to. To be honest I don't like it there at all ( please don't take it as an offence if you live there) I did my reseach online about Barnsley and didn't come across to a single positive review. Words such a social deprivation, high unemployment, chavs everywhere really put me off moving near by. I am worried into moving there and regret my decision after it would be too late. Would I be able to make friends? Find a job? Will I feel isolated? Bored? In a little village? I am 34 Uni educated and would love to settle and have a family. My boyfriend doesn't really want to move away, has his own company near by. I don't fancy going to South Yorkshire at all but don't want to end our relationship because of that. Like anywhere there are good areas and bad areas. There are some lovely areas of Dodworth, some really good schools and excellent transport links. Dodworth is currently benefiting from some new housing developments and has some lovely local businesses. In answer to your questions on jobs, Dodworth is very close to the M1 which makes travel to Leeds/Sheffield very easy. It also has a train station and again travel to Leeds/Sheffield/Manchester is possible so there is work it just depends what you do and how far you wish to travel. Friends/Isolation, is a difficult question to answer as this is down to the individual.

Hi, I live in Barnsley and the people here are the friendliest you'll meet! Where are you from? I lived in Paris for a couple of years; I couldn't wait to get back to Barnsley I felt so anonymous there. Dodworth is one of the better areas - less 'social deprivation' and not too many chavs :-)

I know that everywhere are good and bad areas but this doesn't really answer my question. It is all very general.
I also know how far Leeds is and I could possibly work there but in rush hour we are possibly talking one hour drive? Also less social deprivation and not so many chavs doesn't sound like - it is beautiful here, lots of opportunities and open minded people you wouldn't have a problem make friends with :-)

I am from central Europe and originally a school teacher. I know northerness are famous for their friendliness and I do notice how nice people are to each other in shops etc... However that somehow is not enough for me wanting to move somewhere where I don't know anyone and don't feel comfortable because the area seems to be isolated, not many people walking by, black houses so typical for Yourkshire, it seems quite depressing to me comparing to what I've experienced so far.

I had the same problem for four years. My fiancée is from just outside Barnsley and I lived in London ,. I was really worried that things seemed so different here and really reluctant to move. I didn't seem to be able to picture myself here at all.
I moved here recently and to my surprise absolutely love it. My neighbours are really friendly and invite me to lots of things.Tonight I am going to a Mothers Union fashion show in Wath upon Dearne with one of them for instance. I am going to a church nearby and know so many people and we are always doing something.I also have plenty of time to go to the gym which I never had time to do in London.People are very very friendly but I think you have to make a big effort yourself to speak to people and get involved with something .I used to worry that people wouldn't understand my accent (which sounds really mad) but I think it was just getting used to feeling comfortable in a different environment and feeling confident here which I never did when I just visited at weekends.
The best thing is the pace of life is so much more relaxing. I no longer have to commute three hours a day ,we have a good standard of living, a nice house ,things that would be really difficult to have in London. We can visit York ,Leeds ,Sheffield,Manchester so easily from here and the peak district is amazing and so close.I am even getting use to the weather ! My family are southern European so I never ever thought I would move anywhere colder than London but South Yorkshire can be a great place to live.

Thank you so much for your reply. This is what I needed to hear :)

Nobody can understand better my thoughts and worries if they are not local and especially English. I am glad you mentioned the accent too. I am not worried about people understanding me, it is more the other way around. I feel like listening to a completely new language and feel the barrier is even bigger for me. Another reason why I don't really want to be around and look for people/friends I can have a conversation with. I would struggle.

I also travelled so much and always lived 'cosmopolitan' life. I assume people in Yorkshire don't travel much, I heard most of them were never even in London. I know that part of the UK is a beautiful place to live but for me just so much different from what I have ever experienced. Hence the doubts.

It would be lovely if we could meet once I move there. Thanks a lot again, all the best!
