Suggestions for where to donate my son's old toys!

I have tonnes of toys that my son has grown out off (cars, fire engines, etc) and wanted to donate them somewhere. Yes, I could take them to a charity shop, but I was wondering if anyone knew any mother and baby homes, children's homes, etc who would accept them?
