Auckland: Landing, Renting and Starting School....

Looking at schools, you need to have a proof of address. Most say that a tenancy agreement isn't enough and that you need a bill, which they acknowledge could take a month.

How does that work for immigrants then? Do you just give your kids a cheeky month off school?

I can't help as ds1 was a pre-schooler when we moved here but wanted to acknowledge your post. I did find it difficult though getting any kind of credit, buy a mobile phone and set up bank accounts when we first got here as we technically didn't exist - no credit rating or proof of address as we were living in a motel/serviced apartment. Sounds like the school system may be the same if the school roll is full. Hoping somebody else can shed some light.


BTW If possible I would set up bank accounts before you come, get credit cards if you use them and bring some kind of credit history from home.

Hi Highlander! When we moved to NZ (10 yrs ago, so not sure if relevant!), I started school whilst we were still living in a motel. Is it all schools that need proof of address? Maybe the schools are full up these days.

I would second what Sibble says, getting bank credit cards etc set up if possible. I think the first thing we did was to join the library, and the library sent us a letter that was acceptable for proof of address.

We just needed proof our address - and the tenancy agreement was proof enough. We are in Wellington.
