OK, this should probably be in travel but I know I'll find the experts hereGrin. DH, DS(8) and I are spending 1 night in Munich before Christmas (en-route for a ski break) and I'm looking for restaurant & Weihnachtsmarkt recommendations.
We'll be there on a Saturday so I'm keen to make sure I have a reservation. Not looking for anything too smart, just don't want to get caught in a tourist trap. Probably a nice Beisl/Gasthof or a contemporary version? We're staying near the Hauptbahnhof so somewhere central.
In terms of markets which are the best ones (apart from the main one), is there one that's perhaps more genuine crafts orientated.
Any help much appreciateGrin

The big Weihnachtsmarket in the centre of town is lovely, at the Viktualienmarkt.

We always went out to the Schwabing Xmas market which is more crafts and alternativey. You can get the Ubahn out to there.

Don't go to the Hofbrauhaus, or just poke your head in to have a look. We go to the Schneiders Weisses Brauhaus - that is where the locals go not the tourists.

Go for a late breakfast, and have the Weisswurst - they are supposed to be eaten before midday.

You might not want Italian food, but if you do try Vapiano.

Definitely go to the Fünf Höfe shopping arcade. Very chic chic München. We always go there for a cup of tea and a scone.

Will ask DH when he comes home about other places to go. He will be there in a few weeks, and I am very jealous.

If you want one more crafts would def recommend Tollwood, it's more of a festival with loads going on amazing at night too, loads of food and drink stalls as well as crafty stuff to buy, and all sorts of weird and wonderful things on the stalls. I'd say it's my favourite.
You can get a brilliant free iPhone app with the German Christmas markets, and it has a zillion different Munich ones with the dates, description of market, opening times and address/ route planner, but it's all in German

How about the Christmas market in the Englisher Garten? It's probably my favourite one in Munich. There is information in German here

The big Feuerzangenbowle at Rindermarkt (behind Marienplatz) is worth a try but be aware that it is stronger than glühwein.

Thanks ErnestTheB & Cardi, I'll add those to my to do list. I'd love an App but sadly I'd need to buy a new phone firstGrin.

I wanted to (very belatedly!) thank you all for your advice. Sadly we were due to fly from LHR on 18 Dec........the day of THE snow (that you can all cope with in GermanyBlush) so the Munich trip never happened. We have managed to re-book the trip for Apr but sadly will not be going to Munich as flying to Innsbruck. Oh well, another time perhaps!
