My father went into hospital with back pain 4 months ago, only to find out that he has an aggressive for of kidney cancer which had spread to the spine. He has subsequently had his kidney removed, surgery on his spine and undergone a course of radiotherapy. Sadly we found out yesterday it had not worked and the cancer in the back has grown and can now also be seen on the lungs and in the pelvis. My dad is 60 and always very resilient, but he is in so much pain and has lost so much weight, it is hard to stay positive. I just wondered if anyone else is going through something similar or has any experience of kidney cancer. I guess I just want an idea of what the next steps are and what to expect. Thanks X

I don't have any direct experience of kidney cancer, but didn't like to see your post go unanswered. From what I do know about advanced cancers, I would have thought that there will be further treatment available to him, perhaps in the form of a different chemo. Does he have a consultant appointment lined up? They will advise.

Definitely ask about pain relief, and also if there are organisations in your area that can offer other services (dietary advice, counselling, exercise, social groups etc) to people in his situation. Ideally prepare a list of questions to go the appointment with and have someone go with him to take it all in. Best wishes to you, your dad and family.

Clinical trials may be another option to enquire about or research yourself. See the cancer research UK website, they list them by cancer.

Thank you both for your replies. You're both very kind. It's palliative care, so pain relief is the main priority. I just hope we can make him comfortable and manage to have some quality time together over the coming weeks. It's very sad, as my baby isn't due until November, so he may never meet his first grandchild. But I do know he has loved seeing the pictures from the scan, and it has brought a smile to his face when he talks about it.

I'm so sorry to hear you are also going through something similar. It's so devastating how fast it all seems to happen. I hope your father is able to find some comfort and a reprieve from the pain.

Just wanted to send best wishes and say I am thinking of you and your Father. My Father also died of kidney cancer in his sixties. It can be very quick - I think you are definitely doing the right thing in making every day count. If you have a Hospice team involved with your Father's care, try not to be shy about talking to them about your Father, and what he likes or dislikes. Now is the time for all those little treats. x
