Progesterone side effects

Hi everyone,

Over the last year I’ve had 4 miscarriages and have finally seen Prof Quenby in Coventry. I had my first appointment last week with lots of blood tests and have my telephone results in a couple of weeks. In the meantime she has prescribed Cyclogest pessaries from cycle day 21 and aspirin if we get a BFP.

I’ve started taking the cyclogest this weekend and have noticed a couple of side effects. I’ve had 2 raging headaches after I’ve taken the 2 morning doses and then really itchy nipples (...apologies Blush). They’ve been so itchy they’ve been distracting but it’s not the kind of itchiness you can satisfy by scratching...if that makes sense...more of a tinglyness.

I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?! I’ve had a little look on Dr Google and in the leaflet in the packet but wanted to hear some real life experiences.

Also, if anyone has an success stories using progesterone and aspirin I’d love to hear them...it would be very reassuring!

Thanks, Lou

Hi,
Yes I had the itching on my previous cycle of IVF and horrendous headaches this round. Both issues settled down. Seemed to improve once I was more rigid with my dosing routine.

I had sore nipples and headaches. Then after I got my bfp got spotting and severe cramping too but that was down to the pessaries - if you’re taking the injections then you won’t get that

Thanks for your responses!
Glad to know that others have had the same and it’s not just me being super sensitive!
I’ve just got everything crossed that this will be the answer we need...although I’m very aware of how lucky we would be if it worked first cycle.

I’ve been on cyclogest pessaries for a week now, Im so bloody itchy and irritated, like I have thrush which, from what google tells me, is quite common. I’ve not had any other side effects but holy crap, i just want to scream!!! Egg transfer was Thursday so patiently waiting my pregnancy test however I’m not sure if I can take these for another 11 weeks, there has got to be something else?

I did 12 weeks on progesterone during the last cycle and other than feeling constantly bloated it kind of settled down, it was boring rather than unbearable.

I have been taking them rectally rather than vaginally (this was advised by my clinic). The medication absorbs just the same.

No side effects aside from some constipation initially (but I think this is more to do with the hormone than the, er, mode of entry!)

It seems icky but you do get used to it and avoids the lady part side effects which you really don’t want during IVF.

Yes same, sounds odd but it less messy for sure!

I'm on Clomid and progesterone (Crinone 8%) and I'm finding it's had a huge impact on my mental health. I think the progesterone is more to blame for that. I usually have pretty good mental health, but the past few months have been horrendous - really low mood, inability to cope, tearful. Physically, it's sore, itchy and very uncomfortable!
