IVF Progesterone Pessaries

Hi there,

I'm on my first round of IVF and have been provided with progesterone pessaries prior to embryo transfer.

My question is, has anyone had these before and if so, did you find that much of the pessary came out during the day?

I was told to expect some leakage, but I feel like I'm loosing pretty much all of it! It's not such a problem at night as I'm laid flat and not moving, but I don't know how to avoid general movement during the day!

Has anyone experienced this and still had a good result after transfer? I'd hate to think I'm not getting the progesterone I/my embryo needs to implant etc.

Yes, they're pretty ubiquitous for IVF. Strongly suggest you put them up your bum not vagina - no mess and won't irritate your cervix. If you poo one out just use another. You can use KY (or similar) if you find them a bit...pointy to insert

I'm a little bit hesitant to put them in the other hole, but maybe I should man up a bit! Thanks for responding.Smile

Boaster are you doing them twice a day? Morning and night? If so just set your alarm a little earlier in the morning so that you can put one in and lay there for half an hour. I was told that the dose is SO much higher than needed so even if you lose almost all of it it shouldn't matter. The back entrance isn't so bad... I was massively hesitant too but pp is right, it's far less messy!

Yes they're meant to come out, the wax is a carrier for the hormone, and the wax itself isn't absorbed the body.

Hi Sammy,

Yes, I'm doing them morning and night. I have been waiting a good 20-30 mins before getting up after the morning one, but it seems to just fall out almost straight away...and bit by bit during the rest of the day.

At first I was concerned that I wasn't putting them far enough in, but I've got better at doing them now and I'm sure they are where they should be.

I'm reassured to hear that the waxy part is supposed to melt away and that the dose is much higher than it needs to be for that reason.

How far should the bottom one go in? I'll be a nervous wreck trying to do it...I'm a bit of a woos with things like this.

Thanks for all your advice.

For me the mess from the fanny bullets was the worst part of ivf, I hated it! I had to wear a pantyliner constantly, then for most of the resulting pregnancy as well as once the bullets were stopped the delightful pregnancy discharge took over. Lush. But yes the coating is meant to come out. I tried up the bum but it gave me burny poos so I went back to vaginal.

Not very far in your bum. Your muscles kind of take over and snatch it away from you anyway... Blush

I did only vaginal until the night before ET when the clinic asked forced me to do it te tally. I realised it was far less scary than I thought and chopped and changed after that as the front was getting a bit irritated anyway. Did make me a bit windy though! Lol.

Excellent advice ladies. Thank you. Tomorrow is my embryo transfer, so hopefully (all being well) I won't have to do these horrible things for more than 12 more weeks!

Try putting the pessaries in after your morning shower - I found the heat / steam from the shower melted the pessaries and made them run out. (Am now pregnant though!) Good luck.

Actually that is what happened this morning Alice, it's a good point.

Thanks for all your well wishes folks Grin

I know you didn't t ask this, but embryo transfer is totally fine, by the way. I found the worst bit was when they took the speculum out!

Hi Alice,

I think it's going to be the longest and most nerve wracking two weeks of my life waiting to do that pregnancy test after tomorrow!

The embryo transfer process isn't that bad so don't worry! Slightly uncomfortable but over fairly quick! As for the pessaries, I always put them up my bum...far less mess!
