3rd Ectopic Pregnancy Want To Share My Story

Hello Ladies,

Firstly, I want to say I have never posted on one of these forums before but for many years I have found hope and strength in all of your posts.

I have suffered from 3 ectopic pregnancies, my first in 2010 my tube ruptured I had my right tube removed. Second was treated in 2014, where I was treated with methotrexate injection and in my left and only remaining tube. Unfortunately today, I have suffered my 3rd ectopic pregnancy in my left tube again and I have been treated with methotrexate again.

I am at a loss, it is the most devestating experience, I am only 26 and I don't understand why this is happening to me.
But, finding these forums has given me hope that I am not alone, many women experience this, I am hoping for a miracle and I'm going to try and remain positive.

Hi RoseBud,

Thank you that means a lot, with my first ectopic whilst in surgery to remove my tube the doctors looked at my other tube and said it looked fine, so I am at a loss why it has happened again twice in my other tube. I have asked several doctors and they have said for whatever reason my tube must be damaged inside.
I have been pregnant naturally and I have no problems with getting pregnant, the pregnancy just doesn't make it to uterus :(

I have searched for someone with a similar story to mine in the hope that there is a success story out there.

Some people are very lucky. Some people (like me) have crappy ovaries that don't do anything! Some people (like you) have damaged/partially blocked tubes that don't let the embie get comfy in the uterus. But none of this should stop is having a baby eventually.

Have you considered looking into your fertility treatment options at all? There is a lovely lady on my TTC with PCOS thread who has had both tubes removed due to blockages and is now having IVF.
I finished my first IVF round in Feb. I'm not gonna lie, it's physically and emotionally so so draining but it does feel like your moving forward a bit.

Something to think about maybe? X

I haven't looked into fertility treatments, I have never really thought about IVF but I think maybe it will be something I will look into in the future. As I only had the methotrexate injection 2days ago it's still a waiting game to see if it has worked, I'm currently in pain. But mainly I'm trying to mentally get my head around why this keeps happening.

Thank you for your replies, I will have a look at your thread. If you don't mind me asking, have you had successful IVF treatment?

I thought you might like to hear a positive outcome story. I lost one tube after a ruptured ectopic pregnancy almost 10 years ago. The consultant who removed it checked the other tube and said it was "uncertain" if it was damaged or not. I was told that I would be an excellent candidate for IVF as I had no trouble conceiving, and I am sure you would be as well. I did get lucky and have since had three uterine pregnancies, each one of which had to be carefully monitored in the early days until it was determined to be in the correct location. Sadly I had an early miscarriage with the second of those pregnancies, but I have just given birth to my second child. There is hope.

Thank you so much for replying. Congratulations :) it is so lovely to hear a positive story.
Unfortunately for me as I have been treated with methotrexate in my remaining tube twice now, there isn't much hope, if I fall pregnant again another ectopic will most likely happen.
I think it is time I start to consider IVF treatment in the future.
To add fuel to the fire, my most recent partner has been very horrible to me during this time, we split just before I found out I was pregnant and I have been through it this time on my own.
As silly as it sounds, I am worried about the future, finding a partner to accept my fertility and who would be willing to go through IVF.
I am really struggling to cope with it this time around I feel like giving up on my chances of having a baby :'(

Aisha- I got my BFP from my first cycle of IVF but mc'd at 5 weeks

I have 5 top quality embryos in the freezer though so I have opportunities to try again and I'm planning a transfer next month. X

Hi Aisha, I had two ectopics on the same side and lost that tube. The remaining one did work fine for a bit (I have been pregnant since, with one birth and two miscarriages) but now am knocking on (nearly 41) so have moved on to IVF to speed things up. I start my injections tomorrow.

I'm sorry for what you are going through, and I hope the methotrexate doesn't make you feel too shit. .

Have you found the ectopic pregnancy trust website? They have a forum on there with a lot of different stories. It sounds as though IVF might need to be an option for you, but the good news is you have plenty of time to decide how you want to proceed and there are options. Take care.

Thank you for your reply. Since my second ectopic pregnancy I searched for women who had experienced the same thing as me. I found many women who had 2 ectopic pregnancies and have been able to conceive naturally, unfortunately now I have had my 3rd ectopic and my remaining tube has been treated with methotrexate again I think the odds of me having a natural pregnancy in the right place are very much against me.

Yes you must know having methotrexate is not a pleasant experience I feel awful!
I am going to try and stay positive and hope that in the future when the time is right it will happen for me :)

Hi Aisha,

Firstly I'm sorry for your loss and that you've been through another one recently.

Like you I've also been through 3 ectopics, I was told we're pretty rare! I have a positive story for you and hope it helps.

My first ectopic ended up with my left tube being removed and a full op (it was 2002 and I don't think there were many other options available)

The second one was treated with methotrexate, I remember bring quite poorly with that so I hope you're doing ok. I had a few HSG's after with that tube which all came back clear however ended up with a 3rd ectopic in the remaining tube.
That one took a little while to diagnose. I suddenly went a bit downhill in the hospital bed and they whipped me down to operate.
Just before drifring off I remember begging my lovely consultant to save the tube no matter how badly damaged it was.
I woke up with him holding my hand saying he'd done what I'd asked and somehow he'd removed the ectopic and 'soldered' my tube back together.
We were told afterwards there was a 50:50 chance of conceiving naturally otherwise it was the IVF route and poss removal of the remaining tube.
We were really lucky to have 2 babies already (one conceived before the ectopics and one after the first one) so decided we'd have one last go and if the tube had to go at any point then that's that.

Our 3rd DS got through despite all the odds and my knackered repaired tube so anything's possible!

Its been 5 weeks since i found out i was pregnant has anybody had the shot and just been ok i feel very nervous on what to expect would aprrecite some replys thanks just feel so alone as people who havnt dealt with this dont understand how emotionally shit it is thanks

I've just had my first ectopic. I had 2 shots of mtx one week apart because my HCG wasn't going down.

I haven't been feeling too bad other than, feeling tired, grumpy, acne, loss of hair and apetite . So basically no pain, but feeling crap in general...

Two days ago my hcg was finally at 60, so I don't need to get any more bloods until next Tuesday that hopefully they will give me the all crear.

How long after the shot did your doctors you can get pregnant again? I was waiting for my cycle to finish so I could start with my frozen embryo transfer, but my fertility clinic says I have to wait 6 months because of the mtx, which it sucks as hubby and I are no spring chickens!

Hi sorry to hear what u going thorugh and yes the doctors are right its 3 month 1 shot 6 months 2 shot etc only symptoms ive had it going toilets all the time and tired out was quite surprised because was expecting to be poorly i go back tomorrow for 1st blood test after the shot . Have u been given the all clear yet ?

Hi Hayleymw55 how are you feeling ?

I got pregnant de the 2nd cycle after failed IVF. I supose my body was still in gear after all the stimulation drugs I had. Otherwise I don't ovulate without medication.

I think it's worth trying, you can still have an ectopic with IVF, aparently the embryo/s can "climb" up to the tubes, but it's not that common.

Feeling a little better in my self day 6 with the mxt drug and levels are dropping how are you ? Me and my parnter have decided we going to try one more and if its eptopic again im going to ask them to remove my last tube and go for ivf carnt keep doing this its emotionally and mentally draining but we carnt lose hope how are you holding up emotionally ?

Emotionally I'm not doing so well. It comes and goes. I've got waves of rage. It's going to be so weird prevent pregnancy for 6 months...

Do you qualify for funded IVF on the NHS?

Ive just been for my bloods im hoping im all clear aswell and no we dont qualify got to save 5 and half grand the doctors told me today theres no point in anymore treatment ivf is our best shot im just fed up to an all new level im not doing so well emotionally but just put a face on as people around me dont seem to understand and i no going to be weird for us using comdoms for 3 months

I'm so sorry for all the ectopics on this tread. Life can be truly cruel.

I thought I would share my story in case it helps anyone. I have also had 3 ectopics. After the first 2 we had one tube remaining but were recommended to do ivf. We did a fresh cycle which failed and then got pregnant immediately after with our 3rd ectopic. At that point I'd had enough, I had one tube rupture and emergency surgery and was terrified of going through it all again so asked them to remove my other tube. It is an adjustment to have no tubes but there is a kind of certainty to it. Anyway, fast forward a bit and we did a frozen cycle (we had 2 embryos) from our fresh cycle. I got a BFP and that little one is now a toddler. The second frozen embryo is now growing in me as I'm about 8 weeks pregnant.

My consultant said to me it's not if you have a baby but when. iVf was designed for tube issues. It's not great but it is possible.

Ladies sorry for all you're stories. I never had an ectopic but was high risk after years of problems with my tubes from a teenager, I had one removed in my early 20's because it was twisted. When me & DH decided to TTC I got the other tube looked at and was told it was blocked, I had it flushed but the chances of ectopic was high. After 6 months it was blocked again and I took the decision to remove my final tube, for health and fatility reasons! IVF was my best shot!

I'm now 5 weeks pregnant on my 2nd round of IVF.

Point of sharing my story is to show there is lots of help out there, as Tepid said IVF was designed for tube issues,

Hayley the process is so individual and so hard to say but if you're talking about the actual medical process we started injections this cycle (short protocol) on the 25th June and tested for pregnancy on the 23rd July. My eggs we're collected on The 8th July and put back on the 12th July. We started the process with this consultant in January, we delayed a little to be 100% in the right frame of mind but we are private patients so I guess have a little more control over the time line than if you are on NHS. Thanks for the reply we will be going private once we have saved the money as we dont qualify for nhs treatment i no sounds a daft question but when then take your eggs does it hurt and is there any side effects to the injections ? And the process seems pretty quick all in all x

Hi Hayley.

We were in the same boat didn't get NHS funding :-(

EC is uncomfortable, I had it done under a general anaesthetic and I was sore for a couple of days after, bloated etc but more than manageable however it's such an individual process.

The only side effects I had to the injections was over stimulation on my 1st cycle, The injections day to day I didn't have any side effects, the process drains you though so clear you're diary, drink lots of water and early nights xx
