I had no idea hornets could be so deadly; I just assumed the worst they could do was give you a nasty sting and scare the crap out of you. How awful, that poor family.

Were they a different type of hornet? I wasn't aware that hornets even sting.

I always thought they did sting, which is why people are so afraid of them here. But it's possible (or highly likely, in fact) that the Indonesian hornets are a different type, perhaps more aggressive even. Also I think they were particularly unlucky to walk right into the nesting area.

It looks like a whole nest of them attacked the family.

Hornets can give a very nasty sting, even the ones we get here in Britain, the ones in Malaysia will probably be more potent.

hornets are right horrible buggers and give a hell of a sting but they tend to be "lone rangers" in this country, unlike wasps.

it only takes 100 bee stings to kill any adult, according to David Attenborough and hornets are nastier than bees.

my dad fell into a hornets nest as a child, in UK. He was very ill apparently, and delirious for days.

I remember some girls at a Guide event I was helping at walking straight into a hornet's nest. We had to just plonk them them straight in a cold shower at the Centre, fully clothed, and peel their clothes (and hornets) off them as quickly as we could. The local GP came out to check them over, there were so many who had been stung!

I dread to imagine what crimes we committed under Child Protection, but luckily we were quick enough that none of them suffered a large number of stings or any adverse reaction.

Horrible things .
