In the chatroom at mumsnet.com I stumbled across a thread where a BBC executive had asked women to sign up for a show where their self-esteem would be boosted by learning burlesque dancing. The responses were telling. "How about helping women feel confident about themselves by presenting them with real opportunities to address areas of their lives that are bringing down their confidence - outside of their looks?" asked one post. "You'd never see a show about helping men be more confident through sexy dancing."

Good point Natasha.

There is an insidious backlash against "working" women at the moment, witness Perfect Housewife, Wife Swap, How clean is your house etc perpetuating the idea that the home is the woman's domain.

Gordon Ramsay "Get women back in the kitchen" campaign.

I could go on. It infuriates me, but at the same time I see many threads here questioning whether it is better for women to marry a rich man and stay at home and look after the children. I just don't know what is going on. Maybe this is the "post-feminist" era.

And I fit in on neither side of this debate. I just don't know what I think any more.

Apologies - I have not bothered to make this post read very well.

i would not worry - lets face it - in the pecking order that is society - a stay at home mum still fills the bottom slot

Why feel we have to be one or the other..why not take an individual view on all these things

i must admit to being quite interested in the show. i also like 10 years younger, it's more about giving women confidence rather than making them more attractive.

True. I suppose the forwardlash for me was my whole life up until I had children.

I was encouraged as a studious pupil to look to the stars, pick a career, study what you enjoy. I honestly never perceived any difference between men and women and their opportunities.

Then I got into work and trampled 'lesser' men under me in my rush to the top (Didn't really get that far (LOL) but you know what I mean).

Suddenly I woke up with two children, a breadwinning husband, a career in the graveyard, contemplating what the hell was the point.

And yes TV is crap, and I am incredibly easily led, but to be honest I feel like a failure.

Rather I had perfected my toenails and been inspired by a spotless home?
