Sunnis in Tikrit marched through the city, chanting "We will avenge you Saddam."

oh GOD.
I felt so ill when I heard the news.
and it is going to be in public, is that right?
so many more people are going to die.

I can't imagine they'd do it in private, because there would be more conspiracy theories that way.

Am just so about the whole mess.

I am glad they found the bastard guilty.

I don't believe in the death penalty for anyone.

god what a vile situation.
I am so very glad he is not in charge of the country any more and he is a vile vile man but thi s is only going to lead to more blood shed

This is such a bad idea

It's really going to kick off big time in Iraq now though isn't it? (god I sound like a 15 year old )

I just pray that all our men and women in the forces out there are safe.

grim but they can't exactly let him rot in jail can they? shame some sniper didn't get him during the trial

Report
fullmoonfiend · 05/11/2006 11:43

I don't know what to say.....
I can't believe his death will help matters
I don't belive in the death penalty (though I have a vague thought sometimes of leaving mass murderers on their own with a bottle of cyanide and hoping for the best.)

I'll copy a punishment that was mentioned in 'The West Wing'. I would lock the bastard up forever, and show him and endless photomontage of all the people he killed, raped and tortured for the rest of his sad sorry exsistance. And made the sadistic, twisted bastard watch it for ever.

Report
colditz · 05/11/2006 11:46

I do believe in the death penalty, actually, but it is so the wrong action to take here.

This will be seen by his supporters as martyrdom. That's why it is a bad idea. Leaving him in jail to rot would not have created a martyr. Would Jesus have had such an impact if he wasn't crucified, but instead kept in prison for 45 year?

Report
meowmix · 05/11/2006 11:47

really tough to know what to think - yes he's a "very bad man" (as DS would say) but this is internationally sanctioned murder. I'm really uncomfortable with that but DH says its better than him being left in jail as a focus for martyrs. I just don't know. I don't know what hanging him in public will really serve to do.

The backlash from this is going to lead to the deaths of so many other people too.

I think the best thing would be for him to commit suicide in his cell.

Report
fullmoonfiend · 05/11/2006 11:51

MB - some bastards might not consider that a punishment..more a testimony as to how 'right' they were

Report
HumphreyComfreyCushion · 05/11/2006 11:52

Whatever happens, sadly he will be seen as a martyr by some.

"The former leader looked shocked and furious as the sentence was passed, and continued to shout, denouncing the court, the judge and the US-led occupation force in Iraq.

But the BBC's world affairs editor John Simpson said that after his tirade, which was clearly deliberate, as he was led away from the courtroom, Saddam Hussein seemed to have a small smile of triumph on his face."

If this sentence is carried out it will be a disgrace to the civilised world. It sickens me.

And all it will lead to is more bloodshed.

it is good that he has been found guilty but i really do fear for the many many friendsi have in Iraq

Death is too easy a way out for that bastard.

I agree, it's not going to do any good whatsoever.

Report
upandaway · 05/11/2006 12:51

putting this in mega simplistic terms we parents are told you shouldnt punish someone who hits with a smack. ( And before you start I am not trying to compare him with a child !!)

But surely this is what they are doing by killing him as punishment? repaying a wrong with a wrong ?

what example does this demonstrate for the rest of the world from a so called Super Power?

Report
lucy5 · 05/11/2006 12:53

I don't believe in the death penalty and this will make him a martyr. There will be a big backlash.

Report
BATtymumma · 05/11/2006 12:54

but its not being carried out in the civil world. it will be done in Iraq, where Saddam himself has spent 20 odd years killing people for no reason at all.

In Iraq the death sentance is a perfectly normal punishment for the crimes he has been charged with.

but you are correct in the fact that more people will be at risk now.

Report
GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 05/11/2006 12:55

Battymumma, even my four year old knows that two wrongs don't make a right.

Report
Chandra · 05/11/2006 12:57

Oh .... hell is going to break loose. And I fear the repercussions of this hanging are not going to be limited to Irak

Report
upandaway · 05/11/2006 13:15

Am ignorant- didnt know that he will be returned to Iraq.
But still that decision has, ultimately, not really been made by Iraq .Has it ?
Couldn't something important be learned from this and the biggest example of humanitarianism be set by this?

Report
littlerach · 05/11/2006 13:23

DH htinks that he will be "found dead" long before the hanging as there will be such an outcry.
