Read this this morning please join the support group and tweet facebook ect. This poor mum must be terrified, I know he will not be the only one as there are many mentally ill prisoners. But maybe he is one that might be able to get back out of the prisons systems and back into healthcare. Care in the community 20 years on eh....

This is heartbreaking, I can understand the need to remove him temporally from society, as he may be a danger to his own and others safety, but he went for voluntarily for help and through that has been criminalised. He has been turned from mental health patient to criminal while voluntarily accepting treatment. Wtf, that's not right. Another question that beggers belief is why someone in such a fragile state was allowed access to an aerosol and a lighter at the same time. If the doctor felt that he was fine, suffering no illness then why was he still there, locked in and not free to leave. Very confusing for all involved

That is horrible, and the judge let alone the doctor should be ashamed of themselves. Considering his history, there is no doubt in my mind he does indeed have some form of severe mental illness.

My mother has bipolar disorder, and I would be absolutely devastated if she were to be mercilessly put in prison because of her condition like this.

I hope I'll be able to do something to help.

I know a bit about the case as his mum lives near me. It would be great if people would write to the Guardian to express concern, and this is the website about the campaign.

I have asked to join the Facebook group. I never cease to be appalled at the way mental illness is treated in this country. It's just that, illness, and sufferers need help and support. This story makes me wonder if I've travelled back in time by 100 years.
