Getting coal dust out of a carpet??

Does anyone know how to get coal dust out of a carpet. No idea what the carpet is made from(rented house) but we have dropped coal and coal dust onto the carpet and it has been trodden on and is hard to lift.

I have tried going over with hoover, but our current hoover is rubbish and isn't lifting any of it. I also gave the vanish carpet cleaner a go, but it doesn't seem to have lifted much.

Any ideas??

Ouch, tis a bugger. Afraid a carpet cleaner could be the only way to go.
