Stinky smoking smells

Please help - is there a device or product that gets rid of or neutralizes cigarette smoke? We live in a maisonette and the hall and stairs are only separated from next door (who smoke heavily) by plasterboard - the noise level is bad enough, but what I really can't bear is the smell of smoke and I presume the build up of secondary smoke is not great for our health. I don't know how or where it gets through but it reeks.

The downstairs flat has been refurbished for the last few months and the neighbours have only been back in 3 days and hall already smells like an old ashtray. Any suggestions welcome - though I am really not keen on using febreeze or chemical air freshners as I think they too are pretty harmful to health.
