Cleaning an iron

I've managed to get the plate of my iron filthy by ironing fabrics too hot. Now it's all black, how do I clean this? Is there a product specifically for this?

Paracetamol on the sole plate sorted my knackered iron out. I turned the iron on, let the sole plate heat up and then using long tweezers, rubbed a paracetamol tablet over the blackened area. I then wiped the sole plate clean.

There's a fairly recent thread giving other suggestions.

I use paracetamol too but put it down on a cloth and iron over it. Probably safer than using tweezers.

I can't find the one I meant. I cleaned one with soap. - Hot iron switched off, rub plate with soap and rub off with clean damp cloth.

The £1 shops often have special wipe type things.

I’ve cleaned mine before using salt. It was amazing as I’d managed to burn something to the bottom of it.

Captain so put a paracetamol tablet on a soft teatowel say and then iron? yes that would do but the mess might come off on the tea towel. I sew so I'd use a scrap of fabric.
