My house smells catty

Just been away with work and walked in and recoiled at my house smell. It smells horrible. Really catty and litter tray and vile. Hubby says he has changed trays but I suspect he’s emptied but not cleaned.
Short of cleaning top to bottom tomorrow (and cleaner only came Friday) what can I do? Maybe it’s like this all the time and absence made me notice it. Revolting and I need help please!

Where do you keep the trays? My Mum puts a plastic bag over hers and then puts the litter in. Not very eco friendly but reduces cleaning trays and she is elderly. Might help?

I would look at putting the tray in the bathroom...that's where my Mum has hers. She thinks and I agree...that the common habit of keeping them in the kitchen is vile.

Where the toilet is seems to be a sensible option.

Have a good sniff around incase the cat's had an accident somewhere. My trained cat peed in DDs drawer once.

They’re in the Hall way - bathroom is too small
Maybe there’s been an accident I need to sort out. I need to sniff it out but it was horrid. Got some litter liners so I might use those and see if cats will still use the trays. I have an urge to buy a steam cleaner too. It was grim and I’m so paranoid that’s my house smell and no one says anything!!
