Prewash - biological powder and zoflora in the rinse.

Biological powder and washing at an old fashioned decent temperature - none of this 30 degrees stuff. 60 degrees if you can a few times to clear it. I wash most things other than whites at 40 degrees and no lingering BO smells here.

Half a cup of white vinegar in drum. Bio powder in drawer. 40D.

There’s no need to add vinegar or zolflora to the wash. All you need is a good bio powder (Ariel & Persil are both highly rated) and a proper wash at 40 degrees. No quick wash and no 30 degrees - use the full cottons cycle to give the detergent longer to work.

Bio washing powder and replace fabric softener with white (distilled malt) vinegar or put nothing at all in fabric softener slot.

Oh and wash at 40, as 30 simply isn't hot enough for very sweaty things.

If you use vinegar in washing machine it shouldn't be at same time as washing powder/liquid as they neutralise each other. So if washing with both you need to put vinegar in fabric softener slot not the drum.

Bio washing powder/Liquid and dettol laundry sanitiser, always on a long 40 degree wash. Works on my teenager's shirts!

Oh I didn't know it had to be powder! I use the liquid tabs

Actually, the enzymes that make a biological washing powder work are denatured at 40°c so rendering it less effective than a non-bio.
Op, I find that the powder is better and also not overloading the machine as they are so Eco these days and use less water that if you overload, they can't all get a good wash and rinse.

RubberJohnny that’s not accurate. The enzymes work up to about 55 degrees. But even if that were true, remember that modern washing machines are cold fill and will heat up as the cycle starts. The enzymes work best when the water is heating and then over a certain temperature, the oxy bleach in the powder will kick in.

Powders are better than liquid as they contain oxygen based bleaching agents (very different to chlorine bleach). This helps with killing off the bacteria that cause smells. Liquids and pods don’t contain this so aren’t as effective at cleaning.

I had this issue with DD’s school stuff, and someone suggested getting rid of shower gel and using only soap. I know that’s not technically what you asked, but it definitely has 99% removed the problem, and while it doesn’t remove the existing smell, it prevents it increasing.

I swear by Dettol Laundry Cleanser in place of fabric conditioner. Sweat is odourless. The odour develops as it dries and gets stale and is bacteria so you need an antibacterial agent to get rid of it. My gym stuff needs washing at a low temperature and the man made fabric doesn’t always smell fresh without the Dettol.
Wilko do their own version of the Dettol which is much cheaper.

The dettol in wash cleaner is fabulous - DS has always been a sweaty monster and it permeates through layers of clothing from
Inside under layers (tee shirts) out not coats and jackets etc. I’ve washed and soaked and pretreated and nothing has worked but this stuff is a godsend. So much so I bought 12 bottles when it was on special offer. Not a whiff of nastiness!

I (currently) use bio tabs plus Ace laundry bleach and wash at 40c (I've got a teenage son....)

I'll try bio powder

I've also tried getting him to use soap instead of shower gel, but he says he always forgets about the soap....
