What do you use your food processor for?

Hi, just wondering if it's worth investing in a food processor? What do you think? Will it stay in the back of the cupboard or do you use yours in a regular basis? Opinions would be most helpful.

Cake mix. Pizza dough.
Grating large amounts of cheese.
Shredding large amounts of veg for the freezer.

I've had one for years & I don't use it that much at all.

Making breadcrumbs from stale bread.

Grating large amounts of cheese.

Chopping large loads of onions & garlic if making a big curry.

Quite honestly it is such a faff to wash up that it is quicker to do most things by hand. (I rarely wash it up if I've just made breadcrumbs!).

I use my electric hand whisk (egg whites, mayo etc) & my stick blender (soups etc) far more.

If mine died I wouldn't bother to get another one.

There are now only me & DH to cook for, most of the time.

Making banana pancake mixture
Grating carrots
Slicing potatoes

Much less now that I've bought a KitchenAid.

I use it for pastry but that's about it. Same as SpaceKablooie that I use it less now I have a Kitchen Aid.

Oh, I forgot - making banana milkshakes (frozen banana + milk)

Pastry
Coleslaw
Cheese
Crumble mix
Smoothies
Falafels

Not sure I'd replace it tbh. I use my Kenwood chef loads though.

Dame, what's a Kenwood chef? I love kitchen gadgets Grin.

I have used mine 3 times in the year I've had it. I thought I'd use it all the time, unfortunately it's just more of a faff to wash and clean than it is to do the task manually a lot of the time Sad

I think all of these gadgets are only useful if you have a dishwasher you can sling the bits into!

Chopping lots of veg and herbs, like sofrito for bolognese or garlic, shallots and herbs for burgers.

Making 'ice cream' with frozen fruit, a bit of frozen yoghurt and dash of honey.

Making focaccia dough. It works much better than in my stand mixer. Plus countless other things - I use it more than practically any other electrical gadget, apart from the stick blender.

All of the bits of mine barring the motorised base go in the dishwasher so it's really easy to clean up afterwards too.

Oh, and cakes. Some cakes do much better in the processor than the stand mixer - lemon drizzle is one.

Also making crumble mix. And pastry. And scones.

My kitchenmaid is pretty but doesn't get half as much use as the Magimix.

Salads
Gumbo (inc buttermilk biscuits)
Coleslaw
Crumble
Gateaux Basque
Cheesecake
Potato gratin
Cauliflower rice
Carrottes rapees

I have a magimix which I inherited from my parents and I keep it out on the side which is definitely an encouragement when it comes to actually using it. It's also dishwasher proof so no washing up to deal with which helps.

I use my magimix a few times a week for

cakes
crumble topping
pastry
meringues
chopping veg in large quantities
grating cheese
breadcrumbs

I just bung mine in the dishwasher.

I think I need a food processor - but some of you are saying I just use my kitchen aid or whatever - isn't that a food processor?!

I don't really know what I need. I definitely want something that grates. I'm for we fretting veg for one yo DS. I also want to make hummus or pastry or dips or grind stuff up... I was thinking of this one - oh damn, the one I was going to get us out of stock! It's £100 Philips that seemed to do a lot. I need to buy one from John Lewis as I have vouchers.

If anyone has any advice I'd be grateful!

Shant, a KitchenAid is a stand mixer. My understanding is that stand mixers are best for bread and cakes etc, and that food processors are best for chopping etc. Although you can get attachments for stand mixers that make them able to do some food processor tasks.

My food processor is a MagiMix, I think it's pretty good. I love my KitchenAid though.

Kitchen aid is a mixer. A processer is the sort with a bowl/jug and blades at the bottom. Some kitchen aid type mixers have processor attatcments.

Finely chopping veg (for sauces)
Making pastry and crumble topping
Making breadcrumbs (and stuffing!)
Bulk grating and slicing
Purees
Soups

I use mine at least one a week. Also have a Kenwood Chef I use for cakes, whisking etc. Both have a liquidiser attachment, but I use the processor one more.

I use it just about every day! Keep meaning to buy a spare bowl and blade. I don't understand why people say it's hard to clean, I wish it by hand under fast running hot water, dry it and whack it back. Occasionally it gets in the dishwasher but I would really miss it. All the above things plus homemade mayo and hollandaise, salsa verde, mint sauce, tabbouleh, butter icing, chopping all onions (husband hates them big) whipping cream so many things!

Watching this. Been thinking about buying one for ages and I'm having a new kitchen fitted next week so seems the perfect time to buy one Grin

I want a magimix and think it'll be good for grating/chopping for soups/sauces.
Pastry
Pizza dough
Breadcrumbs
Crumble

Presume it'll be good for mixing mince, onions and herbs for meatballs and burgers right? Or to make fishcakes?

Report
PickleSarnie · 27/07/2016 19:29

Pastry, pesto, crumble, breadcrumbs, pizza sauce.

Probably more than my kitchenaid tbh (trying to cut down on cake) but poor food processor lives in a cupboard whilst my beeooooootiful kitchenaid gets all the attention.

In fact, I have just replaced mine. My old one was 18 yo when it finally became unfixable (apparently it was "obsolete" and this no parts available...Sad)

Mixing cakes
Smoothies.

That's about it - occasionally soups in the winter, but 1/2 family like them chunky, not smooth

MustBeThin Mine is a magimix larger size which is recommend if you have a family. Yes all the things you suggest. You'd want to change the blade after cutting the onions for burgers into the softer blade or you'll get mush. My daughter makes great burgers and liquidises the onions first then uses the gentle blade to blend the mince and an egg together.
