Why is some stuff only supposed to go in the top shelf of the dishwasher? What happends if you put top-shelf stuff in the bottom rack?

I think it is hotter in the bottom shelf.

So can it ruin the stuff then, if it is placed on the bottom shelf? Too hot?

Well it has distorted stuff like Tupperware that has been put in the bottom of ours. I think there is usually a heating element in the bottom, which can heat the stuff directly, rather than it just being hot water iyswim.

Nothing has ever happened to my stuff wherever I put it so now I just put it anywhere. I don't have fancy stuff though or anything that I'm all that bothered about even if something did happen to it.

Huh!?

This is news to me! I've been flouting these rules merrily for years!

I have ignored these rules as well, but was curious. Some of the things that come with this warning at small components thar would just fall down to the bottom of the machine if put on top shelf. So I just put it in the cutlerybasket on the bottom shelf. It may be warmer nearer to the bottom if this is where the heat comes from. Still safer in the basket though than falling down on the floor of the machine from the top shelf.

The heating element is usually on the bottom. I keep glassware on the top. But I've chanced it with tupperware and it has been fine.

you can get baskets for using in the top rack. I have had a couple of plastic plates that have warped in the bottom rack

The top rack is more gentle as the water spurts out from below and mostly falls down. Small things on the bottom can end up anywhere if not in the cutlery basket.

I don't think we have had anything ruined when we have used the cutlery basket on the bottom. I thought about getting something similar to the basket from Lionheart, but never got around to it. Ah well, we are soon done with teats and sip-cups as our boy is over a year now so cutlery basket will continue to be used for these things.
