How and where do you store coats, bags and shoes?

I'm sure this has been done before, but hope no-one minds a new thread...

A new front door is precipitating a re-decoration of our hall and stairs - with two girls' dance kits, coats, multiple shoes and school bags, not to mention our own, and only one child whose room has space for storage of such (dd1 has a hat stand in her room), our hall always looks a mess. We have two shelves for shoes, and four pegs for coats, and not much room for more.

I'd like a big box for shoes, where you could stow them out of sight, but dp is worried about shoes on top of shoes etc. This also wouldn't really solve the bags and coats issue!

Would you share your storage/furniture/organization tips, please? Smile

Do you have room for a small cupboard? I have everything in one cupboard - shoes go on shelves, handbags have their own little hooks under the shoe shelves and the coats have a wall to themselves.

We could have a cupboard, though I think it would have to be custom made (dp could probably do it). What about door opening, though? I would think it would have to have quite big doors if it was big enough to fit everything, and then you'd have to back up against the wall to stand back when you opened it?

I do like the idea of everything in a cupboard you could close the door on, though!

We bought a small sideboard for shoes, bags etc. doesn't help with coats though. What do people with open plan houses do with coats?

Do they fit size 11s?

We don't have coat hooks, a coat cupboard, so we use a long, deep plastic storage container with a lid which all the coats get piled into at the moment. We're having our staircase turned though and then we will have large understairs cupboard which will have coat hooks inside.

We have an ikea recycling box in white that all the shoes get chucked into next to front door, at least it keeps them in one place.

Online, I've seen wonderful made to measure wicker baskets with a leather buckle on which would make good coat storage if people didn't want to hang them but wanted them out of site.

this? or this? We have the former in the cupboard under the stairs, but it could hang in a hallway - coats go on coathangers on the rail.

Pils have the latter, but it depends how many coats you have/whether you mind coats hanging on top of coats.

Friends of ours have wicker baskets for shoes, but they don't put shoes on top of shoes. They put the shoes in toe first, so all the heels are at the top of the basket.

We have 4 wall to ceiling cupboards, with shelves and hooks. They are all stuffed to bursting.....

Coats go in various places - cupboard in futility room, hooks on back of bedroom doors (bungalow).

Bags go in large basket near the front door.

Scarves, gloves, hats etc go in small baskets in a big Ikea shelving unit just inside living room door.

Shoes go in bedrooms, apart from basket of stinky trainers/wellies in the futility room.

I dream of a large hallway (we have a corridor too narrow for anything).

We have 4 hooks for coats. Basket for shoes all chucked in. Just the everyday shoes really, as we have a storage cupboard in dining room with a shoe rack for less worn shoes.
Hats etc in wardrobes or coat pocket

We live in Sweden, so lots of outdoor wear that needs storage, plus we wanted to be able to dry wet/snowy clothing too.

We have : shoerack, coat rack with hangers (for grown-up coats) and some hooks at lower hight in the hallway. This is for every-day, non-muddy stuff and for guests. On top of the coat rack is a basket for gloves/hats etc.

In the futility room we have hooks & shelves for sports kits, muddy outdoor wear, bike helmets etc. We also have a drying rack.

We have a cupboard with a drawer each for hats, scarves, gloves & waterproofs.

All courtesy of Ikea, of course!!

I try and only have 'every day' items by the door so it's not overly cluttered, so summer shoes at the moment are in each persons wardrobe.
