What is the best way to clean shower doors

iknowwho · 05/11/2012 08:58

I've had my new shower two weeks and the doors already look gruby. I have been cleaning them with Mr Musces bathroom stuff but they are not really clean.
Can anyone give me some advice to make them new looking or at least see through again?

Limescale remover? Scrub down, shower down, then dry with kitchen paper if you are neurotic like me.

Most of the time you shouldn't need anything as long as you use one of those rubber blade things to wipe them down after every use. If you get any limescale/product residue then clean with something like Viakal as directed. An e cloth to dry works it's magic if you want a shine.

Definitely second the rubber blade thing. My friend has one and her shower is IMMACULATE! Although it's not ideal to be squeegeeing the moment you're out of the shower.

Harpic toilet cleaner. It might not be the best smell in the world, but it at least gets rid of the limescale...

Rubber blade and we also squirt with Method Shower cleaner - which smells gorgeous (I hate the Mr Muscle smell)

Squeegie or Sainsbury's daily shower spray works but you have to use it every time you use the shower.

Yes we squeegie at the end of every shower. WHen we had a shower screen I used to (in addition to squeegieing) weekly clean it both sides firstly with a regular bathroom cleaner, then with a limescale remover (found bathroom cleaner first got a better final clean and shine than just using limescale remover), then I used to wipe it dry with an ecloth and finally I'd spray and wipe it with windowlene to really make it shine. This was pre DD days when I actually had time on my hands! I realise I sound a bit obsessive there

Thanks for the tips.

I hardly ever use the shower and I have no chance at all at getting my teenage DS (who showers 3 x a day) to do a full clean!!

I'll make a start on it.
I can't believe we have only had this shower for less than a week and you could scratch your name on it!

Try white vinegar on one cloth and bicarb on another. Wipe down with the vinegar cloth and use the cloth with the bicarb (slightly damp so it sticks) and rub down again.

I find that putting the bicarb in a flattish dish is the easiest way of getting it on the cloth.

I also use a squeegee after most showers, but we live in a very hard water area so it needs a good clean sometimes.

Erm, thanks curlypoo I think Hmm . Pre DD clearly I had too much time on my hands, my standards have now dropped we're lucky now if it gets any more than a wipe

We live in an area with very hard water and had our bathroom re-furb about 6 months ago.
Plumber told me the only way to stop limescale build up and mould etc is to dry the shower after every use.
My husband does the squeegee thing after his shower and I invested in an absorber cloth from :
//www.the-absorber.co.uk
and I use this after every shower - in addition to cleaning shower (while still naked!) with Cif shower cream and e-cloth 3 x weekly.
The shower still looks immaculate, I'm delighted to say, though it does need a lot of effort to keep it that way.
Tell your son he won't be allowed to use it if he doesn't look after it Mrs iknowwho. His wife will thank you for training him in years to come.

All children trained to swipe down with the rubber blade thing after showering. It's brilliant.

we used cillit bang bathroom spray. Was well impressed, it was disgusting what came off the screen but at least we could see it working.

If the limescale is caked on, try Viakal its really good. Ecover does a good limescale remover but it's not super strong, fine if you clean regularly and if limescale is not caked on. Otherwise, a good basic cream cleaner works absolutely fine.

hattiematie I've been training this DS of mine since he was old enough to take baths and showers by himself so that must be oh, 9 years now and it is still work in progress!!!

Isee It's not a huge problem. He is down stairs cleaning the kitchen for me now. He just isn't bathroom tidy.(not that many 16 year olds are if I listen to friends with teenagers!!)
And cutting pocket money and internet won't work. He works full time and pays me board!

We've moved to a soft water area, and the difference in the amount of time it takes to clean is amazing! Seriously considering a water softener when we move back! Might be a bit of a drastic option for you op...

That cillit-bang stuff and limescale remover stuff is just so chemical and poisonous. I can't understand anyone feeling okay breathing it in.

I've got a rubber blade thing and then I use a microfibre cloth. That's all I've ever used as I've got flipping marble in the shower so can't use my usual vinegar.

It takes about one minute and the shower door and other bit (it's a big shower) look like new.

I use Mr muscle window and glass cleaner with a micro fibre cloth. I use this on mirrors and taps too and they sparkle.

Mr Muscle is serious poison. Hope you wear a gas mask.

Window cleaner cloths - as in the disposable ones pre loads with normal window cleaner works most of the time here. If it needs more than that, standard bathroom cleaner, rinse well, and then window cleaner.
