removing iron on labels?

At a tenner a time new, we tend to get jumpers etc from secondhand uniform sale. While I can replace buttons, dye them to bring back the colour etc, I am having difficulty with the growing tide of iron on name labels, some of which seem very good! Any tips for removing them?

iron on your own new label over the old one?

No idea, but I wish our iron on labels were that good! DS1 has only been in school since mid sept and his are coming off already.

I would iron ours over, but one already has two iron on ones in different places, and I'm running out of labels! The ones which seem particularly resistant seem to have each letter as an individual sticker iyswim. I guess that although there are more bits to come off, it doesn't all peel off. If anyone knows which one that is I might order some of those! Also I have found that it depends where you put the iron on sticker. Putting it on the label is almost an invitation to your washing machine to gobble them whereas on the fabric itself, esp if you give it a generous iron they stick forever but are more likely to be a bit warped.

I have been able to demphasise the letter ones using a hot steamy iron. For those interested I think they are from easy2name.com . The other ones haven't come off so will cross out with permenant marker/ iron over.

I think I will reorder the ones we use at the moment from mynametags.com as although the letter ones look good, I like being able to put a picture on. Our surname is unusual so I just put picture, surname and it means I don't need to reapply for each child.

They do come off if they are on the shiny label but not if they are on the clothes themselves. Then they seem completely molded into the fabric.
