Buying new washing machine - LG or Bosch?

Hello,
My old hotpoint has given up the ghost so I must order a new machine urgently. I'm dithering between a Bosch or an LG Direct Drive.

We recently moved to a 1st floor flat and the people underneath have complained about the noise our old washing machine made. As it was on its last legs I think it probably was more noisy than usual but I'm now keen to buy a quiet model so we don't get any more complaints (they've also been round twice to complain about the noise our fridge makes and to ask my husband to stop doing DIY at 1pm one afternoon because their daughter was going down for a nap and we've only been there 1 month so its already getting out of hand!).

The Bosch models are supposed to have an ecosilence drive and anti vibration noise reduction things and the LG direct drive is also supposed to be more quiet than usual but would really welcome comments from any one who has either.

Must make a decision and order asap!

You cant be serious about the complaints about the fridge ? !!!! I dont have a miele but my mum does and she loves it. I am not sure about the noise levels though. If you have a brochure do they not give you the decibels in the blurb? I wish you luck.

I have a Bosch, upstairs, & except for sometimes when it's spinning I often have to check that it is actually still working because it's so quiet! (Mine is at least 2 years old, newer ones are probably even quieter)

Could you fix up some kind of platform underneath both the washer & the fridge? If they are sitting right on a joist it could be that the vibrations are buzzing through the downstairs ceiling.

(my washer, at certain revs or in a certain position - it does move a bit - sometimes makes all the downstairs doors & all the glasses in the kitchen cupboard rattle )

I had an LG last time and it leaked and leaked and leaked........ Wasn't particularly quiet either.

homeaway I'm so pleased you find the fridge comment as unbelievable as me, they said it sounded as though a helicopter was flying overhead! It doesn't make any noise as far as we're concerned but I do accept there may be some vibrations through the floorboards. The floor in between the flats has been sound proofed though. I have researched the decibel levels but most don't give details for the spin, just the wash and I've been bamboozled by the anti vibration technology blurb, maybe it's more important than the decibels!

ponders thanks for comments on the Bosch although it is the picture/china rattling that I am very keen to avoid as that will have them complaining again! There's not room to put the washer on a platform or it wouldn't fit under the counter but is something we could think about with the fridge.

If they dont give the details for the spin then go for the one that is the quietest when washing. Have you had a look on the which website for the goodhousekeeping website they do recommendations. I will get back to you in a mo.

ARRRR the which website you have to subscribe to and the GH site i cant find anymore. So sorry not much good. The newer machines are quieter than the old ones so it will be quieter than your old one. I would just go for the one that is quietest while washing if you have that info.

would there be space for a piece of blockboard under the washer, mashpot? if you could fit a piece of solid board about 10mm thick it would spread the weight of the machine instead of it all being in one place

is your floor fairly level? mine isn't, the machine is in an outside corner & the floor slopes towards the centre of the room, hence the movement - if yours is level it should stay put. (& I only get the rattling doors/glass once in a blue moon, honest.)

it does sound as if they're going to be difficult neighbours; maybe you should ask them to call you when they get the helicopter noise so you can hear what they're on about

do you own the flat or rent it?

Thanks for looking homeaway. Think decibel rating for Bosch and LG are similar so just need to pick one.

Doris was your LG a direct drive?

Ponders The floor is level, we'll have to hope for the best. In fairness the neighbors seem ok apart from completely neurotic about noise. We own the flat, just bought it!

Oh gosh, have ordered the Bosch and will hope for the best! I don't want to be dissapointed after shelling out £550, never spent so much on a household appliance before!
