What do you use to store every day shoes?

That's what we have done.

I was thinking about getting some of those big plastic tubs, one for each family member and they can fling shoes in there.

Get a joiner in and talk about your design and they will tell you what can be done.
It shouldn't cost much

we have a big plastic tub inside a cupboard by the door. All the childrens shoes go in there. We also have one for hats/gloves etc.

We have one of those pull out shoe draws in our hall(not that anyone other than me seems capable of using it)

a rack of shelves will do. You just have to make sure (some) of the shelves are deep enough for the longest shoes in the house.

Nicest solution I ever saw was at a furniture-makers. They had what looked like a small chest of drawers, each drawer-front was a fake, hinged at the bottom, and tilted down to reveal a tilted shoe-shelf.

You can also hang shoes, and boots, on pegs fixed to the wall. I saw this used at the Marine Mammals section at Sydney zoo, where the keepers are constantly getting wet. It enables water to drain out, and air to circulate.

I have a plastic trug/ tub by the front door which the shoes we are wearing get chucked in.
It is easy to just lift and put away if i am expecting posh guests

We have a sort of bronze log box with drunks pictured and a sawn off bookshelf not the norm but works in our house. Shelf for shoes we always wear box in the hall for out of season shoes, high heeled and smarts and stuff we duplicate, the shelf is narrow and from argos and sawn off as it was too tall.

we use an oak swill basket next to the door, underneath an old oak console in which we store our hats and gloves etc. (didn't realise how poncey we were til I wrote that!)

Ikea do shoe racks for very cheap :)

I use a rack we got in Argos, it hooks over the door and has individual hook things, I think it takes about 18 pairs, about 12 quid. Not exactly aesthetically pleasing but it's hidden away in the big cupboard (ie on the inside of the door) so it works well.
