ikea malm furniture - difference in colour??

We have recently decorated our bedroom and already have several pieces of IKEA Malm furiture (single wardrobe, bed and 2 chests) in birch which we have had for about 7 years. We bought 2 new small chests to use as bedside cabinets. They are definitely the same colour/finish (birch) but the new ones are a much lighter colour.

It doesn't look very good and I'm looking for ideas to make them the same colour as the old stuff. I'm presuming the existing stuff has just "aged" having been exposed to sunlight etc

of course it has aged, it it wood after all.
can you use blankets on top of the bedside tables?
