What sort of rug in this living room?

Can't decide what sort of rug would look right in my living room! Not sure I want too bright and bold as it's quite a small room and I do have colourful cushions on the sofa and obviously the yellow chair. Am going round in circles here!

The carpet is light grey and the sofa is bluey charcoal velvet.

I also can't decide on whether a coffee table would work! The front door opens straight into the living room and is where I am stood to take the photo. Not sure if it would look too cluttered. It's 210cm from the hearth to the sofa.

I went for a fairly neutral colour, as its easier to change cushion colours and other soft furnishings in the room for colour. Get the biggest you can afford! Either to encompass and sit under ALL the furniture, or as a minimum, to reach all the front legs of the lounge/sofa. Apparently anything smaller just looks too insignificant and doesn't bring the room together. (I read a lot of interior design books before buying ours). Ours is a speckled dark brown/beige as I thought a block colour would show stains, whereas as ours hides things.

If you already have a yellow chair and bright cushions, I'd go for neutral also. You could always have a pattern in it to add interest though.

Sorry, just posted the above before you'd shown a pic and the fact there is already carpet down. I assumed the 'yellow' chair was a bright, canary, modern chair, but this one looks much more mellow and gold. I'm not much help I'm afraid, but definitely big enough to fit all the front legs of the furniture is what you need.

@Elouera I'd say the chair is more of a mustard but on the sofa I have bright pink and green cushions.

What do you do in the room?

Is it a space to play on the floor? Do you walk through that space? Do you sit and watch TV, if so, where is the TV? If you had a coffee table, what would you put on it or what would you use it for?

Answers might change this just I would put a bright patterned rug in that room but your post implies that is not what you are looking for...

@ChateauMargaux

The room is used for walking from the front door to the kitchen (often with two dogs in tow) and for sitting to read and watch tv. No children who need to play on the floor. Though the dogs do charge around so maybe it's best to go for side tables only and no coffee table.

The tv will be in the corner to the right of the fireplace.

Not sure if the base colour is too close to your carpet colour.. www.habitat.co.uk/immy-medium-grey-and-pink-hand-spun-wool-flat-weave-rug-140-x-200cm-1781637

I wouldn't bother with a coffee table. I like the idea of coffee tables, but feel like they get in the way.

I'd go for a neutral colour, similar to the sofa. We have a grey sofa and grey rug. Was only £30 from Ikea, but is about 150cm x 210cm. I have colorful cushions, pictures on the wall etc because I want people's attention to be higher than the floor.

I'd get a smallish rug, as a big one will make the floor look smaller, and make sure it's washable! What about a faux sheepskin in front of the hearth?

I may be flamed for this but I don’t think rugs ever look quite right on fitted carpet.

I would inclined to get a bigger, bright door mat to mark out a sort of entryway ‘zone’ as you walk in.

Just to add more details.

You can explore any colors but I will suggest light rug colors - it can make your room spacious. For your coffee table question, why not? I will suggest you to choose wooden furniture and round table.

If you are in SD, I will suggest you to visit Cyrus Artisan Rugs. They have this huge variety of area rugs. www.cyrusrugs.com/location/south-dakota/sioux-falls-rugs

Another pro tip: Keep your rug away from direct sunlight - the sun is not a friend of your rugs.
