Hall - paint/carpet colour

My hall is fairly large, Victorian with high ceiling but quite dark. There are 7 doors leading off it plus the staircase. I am going for white for the doors/surrounds and skirting which will lighten up a bit but am very undecided about wall and carpet colours.

I am keen on a grey carpet but that is not set in stone if you guys can come up with good ideas and am going between pale green, pale mauve (heather) or just off white. There may or may not be a chair rail thing so the bottom bit could be slightly darker than the top bit.

I have grey walls in my living room, green in the dining room and yellow in one of the downstairs bedrooms, I've loved these colours since we bought our first flat 35 years ago and seem to always gravitate towards them so was thinking of something a bit different hence the thought about mauve/heather.

I would really appreciate so help with my choices. DH is working overseas right now but he is a bit colour blind so is not much use anyway Smile

I'm anti grey, especially in dark rooms or areas and because I don't like to follow fashion. I think you need some warmth. I'd go sandy coloured heather carpet, so not a solid colour as they don't hide muck as well.

On the walls, Crown Wheatgrass above the dado and F&B London Stone below it. White ceilings.

That's what we used to have in our old hall and it was warm feeling, welcoming and lightened the place up. The wheatgrass paint was lighter than it looks on the Crown website.

I'm doing the hall, stairs and landing at the moment, I've chosen a grey carpet, because the previous carpet was brown and I want a change but I also want a neutral colour because I'll repaint a few times before I re-carpet.

Mine's a 1930s semi, so very high ceilings, especially the stairwell, and an original picture rail but not a particularly large space. My doors have recently been restored and dipped so they'll stay pine except for the bathroom which isn't original and will be painted. I'm going for a white ceiling and freeze (the wall above the picture rail) and white door frames, skirting and picture rail, the walls below the picture rail I'm still debating, my current favourite is a called hints of grey, it's on bare plaster at the moment so looks almost white but I think it'll look more grey once it's against the white woodwork.

F&B and similar high end brands are out for me, I need a lot of paint and having the whole space plastered, the doors dipped, new carpet etc. has already cost a lot of money. I'm also paying a decorator as I have some health issues which mean climbing ladders isn't possible.

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure if I want a warm, cosy hall or a bright 'opening' hall - as you can see I'm very undecided.

I have nutmeg white in my hall - its a fab neutral colour, looks different in certain lights but it flows nicely across the house.

Another great neutral colour is egyptian cotton - its a bit more greige than nutmeg white.

You can have any colour carpet with these two paint colours.
