What finish for door handles? And where to buy them?

We have a modern build house that currently has polished brass handles. They are in pretty bad condition, so we've been thinking about replacing them. It seems that most modern houses tend to go for silver/grey over brass/gold. But I really like brass and was hoping to go for something similar.

Woodwork and doors are white. Anyone else in a similar situation? What did you choose and where did you buy them? Also if we do go for brass, should we go for antique brass rather than polished? They'll need to have a backplate as well.

Thank you!

Brass is back in fashion, but I'd go for brushed/aged rather than shiny. It looks nicer, and is more neutral than polished. In a modern house, I'd keep the design quite clean - antique finish not antique shape.

Buy them from proper hardware suppliers, not the DIY sheds such as Homebase nor supermarkets. We've had no end of trouble with handles bought from B&Q, Do It All, and Homebase - the quality is horrendous. Screws that literally snap off when you try to tighten them, tarnishing after just a few months (internal), "loose" springs meaning droopy handles. For similar amounts of money, or about the same, you can get far better quality from proper hardware suppliers.

@Ketzele thanks, that's what I was leaning towards. Didn't know if it would look ridiculous! I was thinking something vaguely this shape and finish.

@Kazzy

Good to know! I was tempted to go to one of the DIY stores but will look for a trade supplier in town or online. I can't imagine how annoying it must be to have something as basic as a door handle give you that much grief! It's not something we will want to replace frequently.

That looks good, Kismett.

Kazzy, really useful advice - I will remember that!
