What colour stair carpet?

I'm at a loss with this one. The hallway has an original Victorian red tiled floor, so I can't change that. The stairs have white walls with a silvery/grey wallpapered feature wall and silvery/grey curtains. I'd really like to keep them.

The current carpet is gold, and was here when I moved in - it's probably around 20 or 30 years old. What colour could tie in the red floor tiles with the grey wall/curtains? I've got used to the gold, but I feel like something else would look much better, but I can't think of anything that wouldn't clash.

I'd look to the grey colour spectrum. Get samples and be careful not to choose a shade that is too dark or has yellow tones. Greys with pink tones would work.
