How do you remove paint from tiles please?

I live in a 1930s house and all houses on street have lovely tiles on the walls of porch by the front door (exterior).
Looks like the previous owners of our house painted over them. I've had a cheeky scratch and looks like wiles are still there. Not sure what condition they'll be in but would I've to get all the paint off and have a look.
Can anyone recommend a good way to get the paint off? Don't want to risk scratching the tiles (look like ceramic glazed type)
