Glare in Windows

Hi, we had a massive pine tree cut from the front garden. Now the front room has the sun directly in the window from midday and it is so bright, also very hot.

We did have vertical blinds but I don't really like them, I find them a bit officey. But what else could I have? Would voiles do anything? I'm not really bothered about people seeing in, just the glare and heat.
