Is linen bedding really worth the price?

I love the look of linen bedding, and I've read it's supposed to be good for keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Sounds great. But it's so expensive!

Is this one of those things that is worthwhile spending extra on, or is there something similar for less money that does the same job? I've seen a few 'casual cotton' or 'washed cotton' duvet covers which look nice too, for example.

I have linen bedding and never use it. It's lovely and cool in the summer but its crunchy too. I prefer soft draping bedding so use cotton that can be machine washed easily. Linen is difficult to keep crispy clean.
I have never found it warm particularly so have never used it in winter. Again I like brushed cotton or fleece in winter, its cheaper and more practical.
My opinion is dont bother, its expensive and a beautiful gift but cotton is so much easier and cheaper.

Can linen washing not be machine washed? That sounds a bit annoying... I love the relaxed/rough/creased look of it, I wonder where I could find a cotton equivalent.

I'm not so keen on super soft bedding. We tried brushed cotton this winter and although it was nice when first getting in, we were just far too hot for the rest of the night.

This is the cover I'm after - it's the perfect blue. But it's £195!!

Nice colour.
Ive just checked my linen bedding (Laura Ashley) and it says handwash only, do not tumble dry or hang out in bright sunlight.
I think thats to do with the bleaching effect of the sun.
Maybe some brands are machine washable but the ones I have aren't.

Soak & Sleep's linen bedding is machine washable, and really lovely. It is expensive but if you think of the cost per sleep...

I saw a lovely dark grey on Soak & Sleep, good to hear its machine washable. Do you have their bedding sound?

I'm worried about the bleaching effect of the sun, though. Sun shines quite brightly through our bedroom window onto the bed and has faded other bedding, but I was hoping to add a light grey throw to it anyway. Maybe I'll just have to be religious about covering the bedding with the throw every day.

The problem with linen is it will look an absolute mess after one night of sleeping in it.

GinAndOnIt Sat 28-Jan-17 15:42:59

Bobbie that's the kind of look I like though - I don't like pristine bedding (mainly because I can't cope with the upkeep!)

I have the Soak and Sleep dark grey pin tucked bedding. It's 100% cotton and its gorgeous. Doesn't need ironing and is machine washable. I love it so much I've just ordered a white set.

It's super soft and looks good even if the bed is messy... other than that - well, depends if stupidly like me you spend a lot of money on it

I'm considering buying linen sheets as I live in a hot country but would like to know if they're a bit rough textured and therefore, uncomfortable? I can't think they would be very pleasant to sleep on? I'm reluctant to take the plunge and they don't appear to sell these where I live (outside U.K.) so can't check in person.

your duvet makes a big difference to your temperature. We bought a baavet a few years ago - it's brilliant - cool in summer, warm in winter, hang on line to air occasionally.

I bought several sets of linen bedding from H&M - I think it was about £50 per set. Washes well and occasional tumble drying keeps it soft.

H&M, lovely soft linen bedding. Wash in the machine quick blast in the tumble drier for softness. My favourite, it was about £50 for a king-size cover and 2 pillow cases.

I have 2 sets from h&m, they wash really well and there's lots of lovely colours to pick from.
