Talk to me about Mattress Toppers...

Our mattress is starting to feel a bit bumpy and unsupportive, but it's only about 6 years old so I'm thinking a mattress topper might help rather than replace. They are quite expensive though and you can't really try before you buy so I want to get it right! Does anyone have one they'd recommend? Hate being hot in bed and I've heard some do that but not sure which type, there are pillow top ones, down filled ones, memory foam ones, microfibre, quilted etc! Don't really want to spend more than £100.

My mattress was 7 months old and we replaced it on Saturday. Honestly the colour difference between the 2 was enough to convince me it was necessary. the other joy is its not lumpy, it's comfy and so clean!

Ours was a v expensive mattress when we bought it so would like to get a few more years out of it before replacing really. Have stayed in some very comfy beds in hotels with mattress toppers on but stupidly didn't look at what they were!

I've got a 10 year old mattress, which was a decent quality, but I found too hard. An Ikea mattress topper totally transformed it. I'm pretty sure it was this one www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/mattresses/mattresses-toppers/tuddal-mattress-topper-white-art-30298202/ At least I remember that it wasn't the cheapest one and it wasn't memory foam. Don't get memory foam if you get hot at night as it makes you hotter. They do UK sizes as well as the usual IKEA sizes.

That one looks good, might see if you can try them out in store. Thanks for the tip about memory foam that's exactly what I needed to know!

We got a dunelm one for our spare bed £99 to fit a double. I love it - it's so comfy and more comfy than our ££££ kingsize feather and black bed in our room

We have this one m.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-soft-touch-washable-mattress-topper/p/1519431?sku=233725392&s_kwcid=2dx92700016649683557&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=CNPEhsC19dECFYm4Gwod-GYE0A&gclsrc=aw.ds

We did have a really £££ feather topper but it would go flat every 2 days and eventually it stopped plumping up and felt compacted. Only had it a couple of years. I'm basically The princess and the pea when it comes to beds so very annoying fussy.

So when replacing I wanted to avoid feather/down. The JL one doesn't really need plumping, the stuffing stays in the individual squares. It's not quite as ' 'sinking in' soft as a freshly plumped up feather one is, but it is nice and thick and soft enough that it has stopped me getting sore hip bones when I sleep on my side. Our new mattress (Hypnos bedstead 5) has quite hard bits on the 'tufting' and I can't feel them at all through the JL topper.

Our spare bed had a rather knackered mattress. As it is used only infrequently I tried an inexpensive mattress topper from Amazon, it was about £40 but had very good reviews. This bed is now the most comfortable in the house, visitors always comment on how cosy it is. I know it is a short term fix but as we will downsize in a few years and not need this bed any more it was worth trying.

I bought a memory foam mattress topper for DS9 yo's bed and it is fantastic. We bought a basic mattress from John Lewis when he went from a cot bed to a single, and thought that he would have so many accidents, it would be best to buy a cheap mattress and then replace. But he didn't have accidents, so his mattress is still in good condition. But it is rather uncomfortable.

I bought a 4 inch( I think) foam topper. It needed about a week out of its packaging to lose the awful smell. And I needed to buy extra deep fitted sheets as normal ones wouldn't contain the mattress and the topper.

It is so comfortable now. Such a good buy. And DS says he is warmer in bed now too.
