stairs hall and landing with dado rail. wtf do I do paint wise

I have a living room which goes straight into the hall stairs and landing. Dado rail throughout. Currently magnolia vinyl painted lining paper top and bottom with dad skirting, covinf and bannisters all white / yellowing gloss. Have 4 kids. 3 of them under 5. Have heard about the diamond scrubbable paint. What colours though. Beige stair and landing carpet, light wood laminate downstairs. Its a rental but we are allowed to decorate. Do I keep the dado picked out in white, do I paint it all one top and bottom. Think paper and paint half and half looks shite. Help!!! Looked at pintrest etc but nothing grabbed me. Removal of dado not an option.
