Those of you that have children returning from uni are you expecting that they self-isolate for a period of time?

I was wondering about this and about contact with their elderly grandparents

No, they are both coming back at the weekend. Both DH and I have to go out to work, at least for now, so it's pointless. We have talked about what we will do if one person in our household gets sick...

No. They are coming to London where there is more virus than at the university so if anything they might want to keep away from me! However I am sure they will go out less once back at home. Their lectures end tomorrow (at Bristol) but they will not be coming straight back home. The university is open and they are busy studying, one finishing a dissertation due in very soon etc.

Why would they self isolate if they've not got any symptoms?

Because you can be infectious before showing symptoms.
If they're coming home to family members who are in risk groups who have therefore already been practicing social distancing etc, whereas they've been living normal student lives then it might be prudent.
DD and various friends with risky dads aren't planning on coming home.

No. I go out to work and come into contact with many people. There’s no point.

OP is about isolating not distancing. If family members are self isolating then those family members shouldn't be visited clearly. Uni students should social distance as much as the rest of us though. doubt they will though
