Just several hours to go and I have a quick Q about a gap year (if DC misses firm)

Hello, may be somebody knows if it is possible to take a "last minute gap year"? DD's firm offer A*AA, if she is getting that, we have no problem. Insurance offer is AAA, but she is unsure about if she wants to take it. So if she is not getting her firm choice, she is thinking to defer entry for the next year to have some time to consider options.

Would her insurance be able to change her offer to deferred and is this something she can do tomorrow? She doesn't want to reapply/resit. Also, if she goes through clearing can she get a deferred entry then as it's not on her original application? May be someone has experience with the last minute changes?

No - clearing is only for the current cycle so she'd have to re-apply I'm afraid.

She may be able to defer her insurance if she meets it, she would need to ask for it to be deferred, but as titchy says clearing is for the current cycle only.

She can ask them if they will defer the place. If they agree and she subsequently changes her mind she does not have to go.

It might be useful for her to have a reason why a year out is important for her. No University will want someone turning up whoze head is not in the right place for whatever reason.

Needmoresleep, the insurance is Warwick and DD now somehow does not really want to go there. The reason is how they handled the recent scandal, so not really a valid reason, just a feeling. So the idea of a gap year just came out today in case the firm is not happening.

If she is sure she doesn’t want to go to Warwick then would it not be better to decline the place & reapply next year? What is the benefit in deferring?

Decorhate - that is probably what will happen. I guess the idea was to buy some time and re think. Hopefully she will get her firm, though OCR 89% for A in English made me a bit worried.

You can definitely pick up deferred clearing places!

My friend is admissions tutor for a large Russel group and mentioned their course picked up a lot of students who wanted to defer last year.... which is why they're not in clearing this year.

If she misses her grades just reapply in the autumn rather than worrying about deferring her insurance offer. My dd did this, best decision because that year of working really helped her work ethic when she started university

Anyway, DD got her firm (Cambridge), so all is good. I had a little cry of relief.
