There's nothing as exhausting as a new job! Give yourself time; do you have a probation period with supervisions?

Hi
Thank you for replying - yes 6 months probation and teams seem supportive though at mo I'm feeling overwhelmed as forgotten everything from training and dreading Monday. Head was buzzing on Thursday as couldn't take anything else in and currently feel stupid as others seem so confident who joined at same time 😢

I think brain overload describes it perfectly Monica! Sounds totally normal. I never expect too much of new starters (including myself Wink) within the first few weeks of a new job as there can be so much information to absorb.

Is this a new line of work for you or similar to what you have done before?

It's normal, so don't panic. No one can memorise a week's worth of training all in one go. Once you start putting it into practice, you'll find you do remember some of the training, and the rest will embed itself as you do the work. Ask for support when you need it, and you will be fine.

Hi
Thank you for replying! Slightly different though still using management systems which I've used in past jobs!. I'm praying some of training has stuck🙁omg! pray Monday is ok as feel down right stupid at moment. So want to learn and do give 100%to new job and don't want to make mistakes though sometimes I do know you learn from such things. 😣🤔😣

Is it a desk job? You can have a notebook on the side, and write down lists of important stuff to remember.

Please please do not worry so much about this. I am in charge of a small team and am responsible for all their training. As I keep saying to them keep asking questions as there is no such thing as a daft one and believe when I say everyone feels like this, And as for those who look so confident believe me when I say they are not or they are so arrogant they think they have got it when in fact they are the prats that make the biggest mistakes. I am thinking of you - sending you a hug (if that is allowed) and it WILL get better I promise.

You'll probably be surprised how much does come back to you once you start the work and if it doesn't then just ask. Doubt they will be expecting you to remember everything perfectly after one week of training, it's unrealistic. Are there manuals/guides etc. for the management systems and processes that you can refer to as an aide?

As for mistakes, everyone makes them whether a new starter or 10 years in a job. Much better to ask if you're not sure of something.

And all those other new starters who appear so confident probably feel the same as you inside!

OP, started a new job seven weeks ago and it has been a massive challenge. For the first few weeks I was so tired I was falling asleep within an hour of walking in the door. I have asked my colleagues questions all day every day (often repeated where I didn't absorb the information the first time) and I have been painfully slow at times.

Absorbing so much information and learning new systems and processss all in one go is a real challenge and I have found it difficult to keep positive when I feel as though I'm failing. What I remember though is that every new job is like this and in six months things will have fallen into place. They will. Honestly. For me and for you.

In the meantime, I feel your pain!

It's perfectly natural to feel that way and no-one will be expecting you to retain everything. As I said, seven weeks into my new job I have learned some things but there are other things I haven't retained at all. It's horrible and I will be glad when I know what I'm doing. In the meantime I regularly thank my colleagues for their help and, on a couple of occasions, have bought chocolates in as a way of acknowledging that they are having to support me. I am also going to be honest with my manager about what I feel I have learned and the things I remain mystified about.

Set yourself small goals each day / week about what you want to learn. It isn't going to happen all at once. Every new job is a steep learning curve and it can feel very unsettling and stressful. Just take one day at a time and, I promise you, six months from now you will have grasped so much and be feeling a lot more confident.

Good luck!

You'll be fine. You've done a great job before, earlier in your life, and you will naturally do it again. It's in all likelihood just a temporary dip right now when everything around you feels a bit new. The first period is the most difficult so expect it to be tough the first six months or so.

I regularly train teams and always say to them that I would rather they asked the same question 10 times than go home worrying about it. In a few weeks time you'll suddenly realise how much you have learnt and can now do without asking for help.

Thank you Parker 21 -and all !
I know we are going over everything tomorrow oh man head. However Parker 21 as you say I will be asking questions till I have it clear, I know it take time to know it all but just to feel a little confident I would love that! Not even looking at notes today as it made me feel worse as couldn't make head or tail 😣😣. Thank you for advice and replies xxx

Just make new notes tomorrow. Depending on what it is maybe you could film it on your mobile, to go over on your own later.

Better to do a thing slowly and get it right, than to do it quickly and get it wrong. Don't compare yourself with the others, and remember it only (whatever it is you do) has to be "good enough".

Hi - Thank you fiftypluswo

Yep - Slowly and surely - I'll get there - It is public sector work, slightly different to what I've done before, so a little daunting. However askiing for guidance where I need it and if I need to ask 2-4 times I will until I know what I'm doing as so want to give 100% to the job and learn the new skills, just need to overcome my jitters and nerves.

You're not alone, Monica. I started a new job 7 weeks ago; the first 6 weeks have been training and last night was my first time in the role (call centre agent) with floorwalkers for support. I feel like I'm just starting with the training again and am certain I've probably failed some calls I'm learning, and adjusting. I think we often give ourselves too much of a hard time.

You'll be great.

I had someone doing public sector work lose a doctor's certificate they were supposed to scan. I sent it in, but it got lost, even though they got page 2 so the envelope had entered the mail room. Very annoying, could have ended in a disaster, but the doctor was kind enough to produce a duplicate for me. So, don't rush things, better doing it safely and steadily, one step at a time, be proud that you take your time and don't rush through with the risk of making unnecessary errors.

Thank you petitpear.
Reassuring to hear I'm not alone here. Had mad day today loads to do and learn. New training tomorrow so hopefully I'll eventually crack it. 3 weeks omg. Like you I do put a lot of pressure on myself and get so flusted if I don't understand or can't get to grips with stuff!.
Fifty plus two I agree slowly and surely - reading stuff carefully and checking things over, asking for help if needed from other team members, some of do whizz through stuff. Thank you xx

I started a new job at the beginning of the new jobs and some parts of it are really easy to pick up but am really struggling with learning a new computer system and just basic computer stuff which I have never had to do before. Fortunately one of my 2 supervisors is very supportive but I hate to keep interrupting their work t o ask them stuff. Also my memory seems to be letting me down. I think my brain is just overloaded with new information. Hope things settle down for you, it is very early days for you and things will get better.

You're just a few days in into your new job! What would it be like if you mastered everything after just a few days? Very boring, very quickly. Ask your new friends if they can spend a few moments to go through the different steps with you. Most people are happy to help! Smile
