Teaching - great career for parents returning to work due to school holidays, an actual 'career', brilliant use of previous experience, skills and specialist knowledge. However, not great due to evening meetings, marking, lesson planning, etc. that means the job is not at all school hours.

I have met a few mums that would jump at the chance to teach the secondary subjects that are in demand, apart from the fact that they can't afford/find childcare to pick up their own kids from school and can't/don't want to be doing marking evenings/weekends.

There are also a lot of mums and dads out there that have time in the school day who might not want to be in the classroom but are awesome at their subject so could be marking at home or at the school in the staff room. Basically a job share, but instead of part time working with each classes, one person does the study for the classroom teaching, the other handles the marking (nicely objective too, so wouldn't necessarily be affected by behaviour in the classroom, etc.).

Obviously, salaries would be lower, but most parents I know prioritise their children so would be happy with lower salaries if can be there to pick kids up and have holidays off.

Utopian? Mad?

Why not just have more part time posts?

Marking informs planning though. How would you know how your pupils were doing and what you needed to teach them without marking?

Also, it's not just making that teachers do at evenings/weekends. There's much more to do as a teacher than deliver lessons and mark books. Is that not obvious? ConfusedHmm
